Ford Motor Co. reported an impressive 13.4% jump in sales last month. Like many automakers, the company’s sales efforts this summer were throttled by the cyberattack on dealer management software and other factors. However, the company made up for lost time in August.
Helping it play catch was the demand for robust demand for SUVs and pickups, which were up 13.7% and 12.3% respectively. However, a look at the company’s sales ledger reveals the very few areas with year-over-year losses.
Electric vehicle sales rose 28.9% in August while hybrids were nearly twice as good, jumping 49.9%. Meanwhile gas- and diesel-powered offerings were up a “mere” 9.9%.
Notable names
The big winners last month were the Ford Explorer, up 97.1%, Ranger leapt 173.6%, Maverick was the “laggard” at 23.7%. The company’s biggest seller, the F-Series, enjoyed a double-digit month, rising 11.7%.
On the Lincoln side of the lot, the Nautilus was up 57% and Aviator was up massively and outsold the smaller Corsair by more than 200 units: 2,596 v. 2,327. The Corsair was one of the few dark spots, falling 16.6% year-over-year.
Joining the Corsair on the negative side was Bronco, which was down 3%, and the Edge and Expedition, falling 54.3% and 18% respectively. To be fair, the Edge is being phased out in favor of a new vehicle.
Like the rest
Ford’s strong numbers mirrored what much of the rest of the industry experienced last month.
Sales of new cars and trucks continued to gain traction in August, boosted by the growing popularity of electrified vehicles, according to a new round of monthly sales reports, which showed Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Subaru, Lexus, and Honda all posted increases in deliveries last month.
Several manufacturers hit all-time highs. The only brands reporting a monthly decline in August were Toyota and Acura.
Hyundai Motor America reported record total August sales of 79,278 units, a 22% increase compared with August 2023. Hyundai set total sales records in August. Kia America also closed August with record-breaking retail sales, higher than any other month in company history, as overall sales increased by 4%.
