BMW has completely redesigned the popular X2 compact SUV for the 2024 model year, enhancing the small crossover’s “fastback coupe” styling. It’s also introduced an assortment of a la carte options that make it easier to configure the right package, whatever your budget.
What is an SUV? In some ways, it’s in the eye of the beholder. Case in point: the redesigned 2024 BMW X2, a small crossover that adopts a fastback shape. These slope-backed CUVs have more appeal to buyers who want the the all-weather capability normally associated with a classic sport-utility vehicle, but who don’t necessarily like the square box design that most SUVs use.
The thing to remember about the X2 is that, first and foremost, this is a BMW. Performance is at the heart of the vehicle’s personality.
Muscling up
Like most automakers, BMW has gone to a high-output two-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine for most of its smaller vehicles.
With the X2 xDrive28i, the engine puts out an impressive 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. As a result, the X2 is well balanced against its 3,803-pound curb weight, and offers brisk performance while still returning up to 33 mpg fuel economy on the highway.
For those who want even more muscle, there’s the M35i xDrive which gets some engine upgrades, including more turbo boost. That takes power up to 312 hp. It also cuts about a second off 0-60 times which drop under 5 seconds.
All versions are paired with a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission. Power is now delivered to all four wheels standard on all versions of the crossover.
Updated design
The sleeker, coupe-like shape wraps around a platform that’s grown slightly larger for the second-generation BMW X2.
The X2 offers a typical BMW interior. You will know you’re in a sport SUV from the moment you open the door. The quilted seats are comfortable but still well-bolstered for spirited driving, and all controls fall easily to hand.
BMW has adopted the “single pane of glass” across the dashboard for the driver information display and the infotainment system. Under the glass, there’s a 10.3-inch gauge cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. As you would expect, both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are supported. And there’s a wireless smartphone charger.

Choices, choices, choices
BMW is one of those automakers that make a la carte buying easy with a whole range of option packages instead of different trim levels, allowing you to configure the X2 to your liking.
Our test vehicle came equipped with the $1,700 driving assistance pro package, including active driving assistance, adaptive cruise control, lane change assist with collision avoidance, and a traffic jam assistant.
We also enjoyed the M Sport Package which costs $2,500 and includes items such as 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, the 7-speed transmission, sport seats, and a bunch of other sport features.
There was also a $4,000 premium package, which buys you the panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio system, wireless device charging, and other nice features. Also, heated front seats and steering wheel cost $550.
My picks
If I was spending my own money on an SUV to use around my home base in Portland, I would definitely buy the heated seats and steering wheel, but not the driver assistance package.
The M Sport package is also worth buying, because it’s a bargain if you like a sportier vehicle. I would not buy the Premium Package, primarily because I don’t care for a sunroof, as they tend to leak as vehicles age. With that in mind, I could design a luxurious and sporty X2 and still keep the final price tag under $50,000.
Driving impressions
On the road, the X2 is very much a BMW, and with the M Sport package, this is one small SUV that can satisfy your sports car cravings.
BMW started off as a small car manufacturer, and it’s much easier to make a small car that’s enjoyable to drive.
Do beware that those options add up. Starting at $42,995, my tester came in at $52,195 delivered. Still, the BMW X2 offers a great value in the luxury-performance segment and much more for your dollar than the larger X4 or X6 fastback SUVs from the Bavarian automaker. You can see the second-generation 2024 X2 at any local BMW dealer, and compare for yourself.
In how many minds is $52K for a sub-compact affordable?
Sorry, we’re on different planes.
