Hyundai May Have Cancelled Plans For The N Vision 74 Supercar According to Report

by | October 3, 2024

Hyundai’s mysterious N Vision 74 supercar has been through its fair share of ups and downs as the rollercoaster surrounding its complex history gets more curves and twists. A new report suggests that the Korean auto giant may have canceled the model outright as it continues to accelerate into an electrified future.

A new report appears to add a new twist to the N Vision 74 saga by saying Hyundai has canceled the project.

Hyundai made plenty of waves when it unveiled the N Vision 74 concept. The wild supercar not only had an electrified powertrain but it was also fueled by hydrogen fuel cells which made it a unique oddball in the broader EV universe. However, while the concept was popular with auto show attendees and the public as a whole, its path to production was anything but straightforward.

Multiple reports claimed that the model would go into production before being subsequently canceled but only to reappear again at the most unexpected of times. That included a recent presentation Hyundai made where a slide appeared to confirm that the N Vision 74 was finally headed into some form of production. A new report seems to suggest that the company has changed its mind once again, and cancelled plans for a production version of the concept.

Mysterious report paints gloomy future

The report adds a new twist to Hyundai’s plans for the model especially after it was mentioned in a corporate slideshow.

The unsubstantiated report comes from the South Korean news outlet iNews24 with the organization claiming that an unnamed source within Hyundai told them that “the N Vision 74 project had been canceled” and that the company is also backtracking on its plans of mass producing the model. Hyundai for its part has resorted to the tried and true tactic of not commenting on the accuracy of the report but a prior statement before the latest developments appeared released to the same outlet outlined what the N Vision 74 is attempting to do stating “The concept car is intended to show future directions, and we have said internally that we are open to mass production.”

Notably, Hyundai avoided saying anything that would suggest it’s indeed producing the car in a move that adds more questions and intrigue to their plans for the N Vision 74 or whatever vehicle would ultimately be spawned from the concept if it had made it through the pipeline into official mainstream production.

Hyundai focusing on other projects

Hyundai hasn’t validated the report but the axing of the vehicle might be due to other projects within the company.

This latest alleged cancelation of the N Vision 74 could be partly due to Hyundai focusing on many other projects. In addition to boosting its profile in electrified vehicles, the company has also been working on many other projects including urban air mobility technology, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and other “software-defined vehicles.”

“Hyundai Motor Company has been working on many projects recently, including urban air mobility (UAM), hydrogen, and software-defined vehicles (SDV),” Lee Hang-gu, head of the Automotive Convergence Technology Research Institute, said to iNews24.  “In order to create a performance car, accumulated data is needed, but it hasn’t even been 10 years since Genesis was created, and hydrogen cars have not contributed to the company’s profits.”

With all of these projects happening at once, the company may be finding that its proverbial attention span is being stretched too thin with some projects having a higher priority than others especially those that might not bear any fruit for another few years or longer. As a result, it wouldn’t be shocking if the N Vision 74 fell victim to this overstretching of attention and was possibly cut to help streamline future development. However, until Hyundai offers a confirmation (or says it’s producing the car yet again) we have to wait and see what happens next.
