Mercedes-AMG prepares to go on its own with new EV SUV that will forge its own distinctive performance identity.
Mercedes-AMG is no stranger to the electric SUV market with the performance brand already offering a souped-up version of the Mercedes-Benz EQE. While the EQE is a competent EV in its own right, the SUV doesn’t have the spark that makes it stand out as a true AMG model and it sometimes gets lost in the broader performance EV discussion as a result.
AMG is out to change that though and confirmed that it’s planning to build a new performance EV that will fully embrace the brand’s identity while also pushing the envelope of performance at the same time. AMG reps even released a lone teaser sketch which hints that something big is in the works that might just change the way you think about AMG’s electrification efforts.
Teaser sketch promises a strong focus on style for new AMG model
The sketch that AMG released doesn’t reveal too much about the mysterious SUV but a flowing roofline suggests that the model will have a strong focus on styling with the SUV potentially looking to win over customers with styling that will be a step up from some of the blander lines that have come to define other Mercedes EV entries in recent years. The model will compete with the Porsche Cayenne and expect that model’s bold lines to be a benchmark for AMG to use when they craft the new SUV.
The SUV could also borrow styling from the 2022 Vision AMG concept which previewed what the future might hold for bespoke AMG EVs. This styling would spice up the SUV shape a bit and allow the EV to have styling that will allow it to better emulate the AMG brand’s core selling points while also being a cut above a traditional Mercedes model.

Performance expected to shatter benchmarks
For now, the teaser image is the only slice of information we have about the EV with AMG not diving into specifics about performance hardware only saying that it will be “an AMG first, all-electric second.” While that wafer-thin quote is not very helpful in terms of trying to decipher what could be powering the EV, there is a chance that it will be powered by advanced axial flux motors developed by British company Yasa which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. The company has made some pretty bold claims about these motors in the past saying that they will deliver higher amounts of power than a traditional electric motor.
With the Lotus Eletre being a potential rival for the model, power should be firmly in the 1,000 hp range which would give AMG’s offering plenty of muscle to back up its claims but until the company reveals final horsepower and pricing numbers we can only guess at what it can bring to the table. Either way, it should be very fast and that will please eager AMG fans looking for more bite in their EV purchase.
They now need to squeeze a V8 in it, unless sales are not important.
