Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Blends Bespoke Style With Speed

by | December 9, 2024

Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed pushes the envelope of performance even higher with SL-based creation also bringing F1 Halo feature to a production vehicle for the first time ever.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the production version of the PureSpeed.

Mercedes-AMG promised that they were going to shock the world with its latest entry the PureSpeed. Based on the SL convertible, the PureSpeed was supposed to be the ultimate open-top performance machine but not much was known about it beyond teasers and strategically placed rumors which raised plenty of questions from enthusiasts and eager observers especially after the PureSpeed concept was revealed.

Mercedes-AMG has ended the speculation with the official unveiling of the production version of this track-ready monster, and it brings a number of new features to modern Mercedes-Benz production cars and it also comes with a hefty price tag and a limited production run to match its bespoke character.

PureSpeed goes beyond its SL roots

The PureSpeed is the latest in the company’s “Mythos” series of limited production vehicles.

The PureSpeed is based on the SL63 AMG but while its SL heritage is noticeable in the interior and the rear styling, AMG also allowed the car to go off in its own unique styling direction. The front fascia gets heavily reworked and the folding roof and windshield have been replaced with a Formula 1-inspired “halo bar” which is mounted above the cockpit and effectively splits it in two when viewed from above. Halos have been in use on F1 cars for several years now, but this is the first time that the feature has made its way into a production vehicle. The exterior also gets red and black livery and the “10s” on each fender are a reference to the famous Mercedes-Benz Targa Fiorio which won the inaugural event. Buyers looking to go for a subtler treatment can go for matte silver instead.

The bespoke high-quality interior is largely carried over from the SL so as a result, there’s not much to talk about here. However, the PureSpeed gets an exclusive intercom system allowing the occupants to communicate with each other (or listen to music through two specially crafted helmets that the company is including with all models. Performance is also shared with the SL63 with all PureSpeeds being powered by AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 which makes 577 hp and is mated to a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.

Purespeed will be a rare beast

Pricing wasn’t released but look for it to reflect the PureSpeed’s extreme rarity with production ebing limited to 250 units.

Mercedes hasn’t released official pricing for the PureSpeed or if the model is coming to the U.S. but the company did confirm that the model will be limited to 250 examples so look for the beefed-up price tag to reflect this high level of rarity. However, Mercedes-Benz also has a history of selling out models like this long before they even make their way to dealerships so it remains to be seen if that’s the case for all 250 PureSpeed models.

  1. Mercedes must be flush with money the way it continues to develop new cars.
