Lamborghini Delays First-Ever EV Model

by | December 16, 2024

Lamborghini delays the launch of its first-ever EV model as it becomes the latest automaker to rethink its electrification strategy

Lamborghini confirmed it’s delaying the rollout of its first-ever EV offering.

Numerous automakers have revealed that changing market conditions are forcing them to explore and re-evaulate their electrification strategies. Ford, Bentley, and General Motors are all taking a second look at their efforts with some of them even confirming they are making new hybrid models to meet consumer demand.

Lamborghini is now the latest member of the club with the Italian supercar maker confirming it’s pushing back the launch of its inaugural EV by one year as it monitors changing market conditions very closely.

A delay of necessity

Stephan Winklemann CEO of Lamborghini confirmed the delay while also revealing the company is exploring the use of synthetic fuels.

The confirmation came from Lambo boss Stephan Winkelmann who revealed to assembled media that the brand’s first ever EV will now take place in 2029 instead of 2028. Winkelmann also revealed that the brand thinks 2029 is not too late to formally launch an EV with the exec saying that the company doesn’t see the segment it competes in being fully ready for EVs by 2026 seemingly indicating that ICE engines could persist longer in Lamborghini’s lineup then some have anticipated.

The delay will give Lamborghini time to focus on its hybrid offerings with models like the Revuelto and the Urus PHEV providing a glimpse into how the company sees hybrids as the figurative stepping stone towards creating a full EV lineup. The Revuelto in particular is out to prove that hybrid technology can help its long-running V-12 engine comply with tightening emissions regulations especially in Europe.

Synthetic fuels in the spotlight

The delay will put a greater spotlight on the brand’s ICE offerings including hybrid models which will be expected to do the bulk of the leg work in terms of sales.

In addition to the delay, Winkelmann also confirmed the company is exploring the use of synthetic fuels to help keep ICE engines a key part of the company’s model portfolio. “We think this is the right way to face the future,” Winkelmann said. “There are discussions around synthetic fuels and this is an opportunity for our kind of cars”.

When Lamborghini eventually gets around to making an EV, the inaugural offering will not be a supercar, but will instead be a four-seat grand touring model based on the Lanzador concept which originally appeared in 2023. This is intentional too with Winklemann saying that electric supercars don’t sell well and the company thinks a more practical four-seater model will be a better showcase for its EV technology.
