All-Electric Maserati MC20 Reportedly Canned As Company Makes Swift Changes To Survive

by | March 6, 2025

A new report alleges Maserati has canceled the all-electric MC20 Folgore as the company moves to swiftly change its electrification plans as it continues to fight sliding sales and slumping demand for its products.

Maserati reportedly canceled the all-electric Folgore version of the MC20 as it scrambles to regain sales.

Maserati is facing dark times as the Italian luxury car company struggles to not only fully realize its electrification strategy but also falling sales with the Grecale and Levante SUVs failing to give Maserati the jolt in sales that the duo were supposed to provide when the company made the bold choice to enter the luxury SUV market several years ago.

It appears things have gotten worse with a new report saying that Maserati has canceled the all-electric MC20 Folgore a supercar that was supposed to be the halo model for the Folgore lineup if it made it all the way to production. The cancellation of this project is providing another chilling sign that Maserati’s struggles are only growing with Stellantis placing it under increased scrutiny for sales improvements.

Lack of demand iced MC20 Folgore

The MC20 is a potent styling statement, but lack of demand was reportedly a key factor in the cancellation of the Folgore version which would have been powered by three electric motors.

The report claims that the reason why Maserati canceled the all-electric Folgore was due to a lack of demand and this lukewarm level of demand for the supercar was not exclusive to it either. The company sold only 11,500 vehicles during 2024 with Ferrari actually managing to get more global sales than Maserati despite their models being much more expensive. The drop also represents a year-to-year drop of 57% and that has been a persistent ball and chain following the company around for years.

In the case of the MC20 Folgore, it was promised quickly after the gas-powered MC20 launched in 2020 with the company proudly boasting that the MC20 would be a transformative model with the supercar being the last ICE-powered supercar from the company before the switch to an all-electric lineup, a move which appears to now be dead on arrival with the cancellation of the Folgore.

What’s next for the MC20?

Despite the loss of the halo model, the Folgore lineup is still attempting to lure in EV buyers with the Grecale, GranTurismo, and GranCabrio all getting Folgore models.

While Maserati’s ongoing struggles are very noticeable, the future of the MC20 appears to be uncertain. Maserati hasn’t confirmed that the car will be going away (it has been in production for five years at this point) but the firm also didn’t reveal immediate plans to update the model either. The company could borrow some elements from the GT2 Stradale to help provide a quick mid-cycle update for the model with the updates potentially opening up room for a variant that could bridge the gap between the standard MC20 and the hardcore GT2.

The Folgore lineup is not going away anytime soon either and while losing the halo model is certainly not a good thing, customers can still go for all-electric versions of the Grecale, GranCabrio, and GranTurismo. However, those models have had a slow start in sales and it’s obvious that the bulk of Maserati buyers are sticking with gasoline-powered models with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo Nettuno V6 expected to be the volume engine in the company’s lineup for the foreseeable future despite lingering resentment from hardcore followers that want Maserati to bring its V8 engines back.
