A Week With: 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X SUV

by | September 5, 2025

General Motors jumped into the now-stagnating electric vehicle revolution with both feet. And those feet controlled the accelerator and brake pedals in the GMC Hummer EV. The truck was paired with an SUV, and it features impressive performance and rugged styling — and they attract attention.

The 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X SUV offers an impressive mix of performance and rugged good looks.

“Lyndon, why has that Hummer been parked on the street all week, instead of in your driveway?” This, from one of my car-loving neighbors who finds joy in the endless parade of new models gracing the driveway of Casa del Conrad.

“Because it weighs damn near 10,000 pounds, our driveways were constructed to support 8,000 max, and I don’t want to crack it.”

Okay, so that 10,000-pound figure was bit of an exaggeration. The actual curb weight is said to be between 9,000 and 9,700 pounds, depending upon how it’s equipped. Either way, there was very real chance the 2025 Hummer EV 3X SUV would have left a lasting “impression” upon my driveway, and I wasn’t having it.

Powertrains and Fuel Economy

Featuring a triumvirate of electric motors, the Hummer 3X SUV with which I spent a week boasted an estimated total system output of 830 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. Two of the three motors served the rear wheels, while the third powered the front. All were of the permanent magnet electric variety.

The 20-module 170-kWh battery pack, the source of a significant portion of the Hummer EVs curb weight (2,923 pounds of it in fact) was liquid-cooled and employed lithium-ion cells. I saw 270 miles of range on a full charge. It took approximately 30 minutes on an EVgo DC fast charger to get from 80% depleted to fully charged.

The Hummer used an 800-volt EV architecture, which is said to accommodate gains of 100 miles in 14 minutes with DC fast charging. According to GMC, that drops to 30 miles per hour with a level 2 charger. The EPA quotes the 2025 GMC Hummer EV SUV to be good for 59 MPGe in the city and 46 MPGe on the highway. Oh BTW, the battery pack was warranted for eight years or 100,000 miles.

Interior Accommodations

The interior treatment was simultaneously spare and complex. The overall design was a study in minimalism, in that the controls I needed to operate the Hummer’s various systems were grouped closely. This contributed to a sculptural look that was at once utilitarian and upscale.

Nice bronze accents and stitched leather upholstery added to the ambiance, with a look that somewhat justified the six-figure price tag GM affixed to the gargantuan SUV. Substantive was the word that came to mind, both in quality and scale, as I was looking around the passenger compartment. That said, hard plastic did show up here and there and was a rather jarring discovery.

On the other hand, Hummer intends this to be a true SUV, so I figured some of that was to be expected for the sake of durability. Speaking of which, the floors were finished in easy-to-clean rubber surfaces, because carpeting just doesn’t make sense in an auto like this.

Two of the three motors served the rear wheels, while the third powered the front.

Storage space was good too, with 82 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second row folded. There was also a front trunk, as the motors are mounted at the wheels. There was a pretty high lift over to deal with, because the Hummer’s overall height was well over six feet. This made loading heavy stuff a bit cumbersome.

Scaling the heights of Mt. Hummer to gain entry was something of a challenge for shorter people. The lovely, talented, and ever so gracious Mrs. Me among them, we picked up a lightweight stepstool for her at HomeGoods, which served her quite well. Getting out was no problem for her, she just hopped down, but getting in was something of a challenge. Once inside, all seating positions offered good comfort and support.

Comfort, Convenience & Safety Tech

Removable roof panels, referred to as the “Infinity Roof” in GMC-marketing speak, provided an open-air experience when removed. The translucent panels admitted muted illumination when in place, which enhanced the interior’s spaciousness. The supportive I-bar between them could also be removed, effectively turning the Hummer into a convertible.

A pair of digital displays were the dominant interior feature up front. Behind the steering wheel resided a 12.3-inch panel for instrumentation, which, of course was reconfigurable in a number of ways. This was complemented by a 13.4-inch touchscreen monitor, which provided dominion over the Hummer’s infotainment features, some useful off-roading tools and a wide variety of connectivity solutions.

Standard features of the 3X package I hosted included CarPlay, Android Auto, a wireless phone charging pad and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. The Hummer EV was also fitted with Google capability as well as a navigation app. A pair of heated ventilated 12-way adjustable seats were installed up front. The steering wheel was heated, and the Hummer offered a tri-zone climate control system.

The EV’s Bose audio system featured 14 speakers, and the SUV could be started remotely. It also had GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving solution, which could change lanes and pass cars on its own in highway situations.

Driving Impressions

Immensely capable, the Hummer’s most impressive party trick was its “Crabwalk” feature. When activated, it permitted the Hummer to move diagonally, taking unique advantage of its four-wheel steering apparatus. While I used it primarily to amuse onlookers, it’s said to have benefits in parking situations, as well as tricky off-road maneuvers. The air-ride suspension system was capable of increasing the Hummer’s already prodigious ride height by half a foot.

Also high on the impressiveness scale was the Hummer’s ability to launch from a standing start. Offering a setting officially known as WTF mode (which GM says stands for Watts to Freedom — to which I say, yeah, right), the 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X SUV showed me consistent zero-to-60 runs in just over three seconds. And, I’m here to tell you, that’s a true jaw dropping, eye-widening experience. You just don’t expect anything this big to jump that hard off the line.

The interior treatment was simultaneously spare and complex. The overall design was a study in minimalism.

On the other hand, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve a clear and straight path ahead of you when unleashing your “watts to freedom” because changes of direction were — as you might imagine) somewhat ponderous. The elevated ride height, combined with suspension settings designed to soak up every kind of rough patch in existence, were not the best combination with which to achieve equally spirted handling. Braking response was quite good and fade free though, even after several rounds of applying those watts to freedom.

Offroad is where the Hummer EV came into its own. We’re talking a maximum of 16 inches of ground clearance here, along with a set of 9.5-inch wide 22-inch wheels wearing 305/55-22s.

While there were no locking diffs (because there were no diffs) the Hummer managed terrain with exceptional dexterity by selectively applying the electric motors to find grip. It was so good, I honestly believe you could go four-wheeling on Mars in this thing — if you could make the passenger compartment airtight — and, of course, get it up there.

In Summary

The phrase “over the top” is insufficient as a descriptor for what GMC has brought to market here. Granted, it’s a Hummer and Hummers have always been WAY beyond “extra”, but this one raises the game to interstellar levels.

Insanely fast, remarkably comfortable, immensely capable (and yes, frighteningly heavy), this SUV really ought to shut the “glorified golf cart” EV naysayers TF up. (Remember now, that’s “to freedom.”)

The base price of the 2025 Hummer EV 3X SUV with which I spent the week was $104,650. The price as tested, with options and shipping charges, was $107,920.
