Initially positioned as Ford’s primary SUV for family buyers, the crossover was scheduled to end its run as 2025 draws to a close. But it’s gotten a new lease on life, reports Headlight.News Mexican correspondent David Loji, though in a quite different way from what we are used to.
Once upon a time, the Edge was Ford´s bet on what used to be a hot market segment in the U.S. market, a natural evolution for an Escape buyer ready to move to a vehicle that was roomier and with a sportier image.
However, consumer tastes and needs change and the Edge gradually lost, its,.er, edge (pun intended) in the American market. And now it has faded off into Ford history.
But while it has been deep sixed in the States, the Edge is getting a new lease on life in Mexico for the 2026 model year.
Some surprises
You might be surprised to learn, however, that this new version of Ford Edge has three rows of seats and a hybrid powertrain.
Oh, and another surprise: it is a product of China, where Ford has a joint venture with Changan. The partnership produces this new version of Edge at is plant in Hangzhou.
Ford continues to shuffle its SUV lineup in México where it has been selling the compact Chinese-made Territory for some time. This subcompact crossover has been very successful and it now adds a hybrid variant. Territory is positioned just beneath Escape – which is only offered with Hybrid powertrain.
The new Edge will be positioned beneath the Explorer in Mexico, and its pricing is a lot more affordable.
Affordable pricing
You might assume that the new Edge is a lot smaller than the Explorer to justify the price difference but that is just not the case.
The Mexican Edge will be available in two versions: the Trend package start at $897,000 pesos ($49,287 at an exchange rate of 18.2 pesos per USD) and Titanium with a price list of $987,000 pesos (approximately $54,230 USD)
The list price for the Explorer in Mexico starts at 1,184,100 pesos (approximately $65,060 USD) for the Active version and tops the 1,469,100 pesos (approximately $80,179 USD) for the ST version.

An Edge-y design
The Mexican Edge is larger in almost every dimension compared to the American version, with a length of 5.01 mts (197.24 inches) and a width of 2.17 mts (85.43 inches). And it’s only slightly smaller than the Explorer, with a length of 5.047 mts (198.7 inches) and a width of 2.26 mts (88. 97inches).
The Chinse-made Edge´s design is quite handsome, featuring a floating black roof and completely flush retractable outside door handles, a design element that is very much in vogue in vehicles sold in China. The front end has LED headlamps that are properly positioned over the bumper, unlike many Chinese models that place them low and more damage prone
The 3-seating row cabin has an upscale orientation and has heated and ventilated captain seats in the second row with retractable foot rests and its synthetic leather upholstery (very common in Chinese vehicles) has a diamond pattern in its quilted sews. First row seats are also heated and vented. It has a 12.3-inch reconfigurable instrument cluster and its infotainment system features a 13.2 touch screen, B&O 12 speaker sound and a Qi charger for smartphones
Powertrain
The powertrain is hybrid and has 2.0-liter turbo 4 cylinder and a CVT automatic transmission. Total output is 271 HP and 298 lb.-ft.
It is available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. Per Ford de Mexico, the range for the new Edge is 1100 kms (683 miles) with a full tank of gasoline.
