A Week With: 2026 Ford Maverick Lobo

by | April 10, 2026

Today’s pickup trucks are increasingly being called upon to fulfill the roles cars did in days past. With the Lobo package, Ford’s engineering team has tried to infuse the Maverick compact pickup with the DNA of a compact sport sedan. Did they succeed? We spent a week with the Maverick Lobo to find out.

Ford infuses its do-it-all Maverick with a bit of performance chops with the Lobo package.

Sharing its unibody platform with the marque’s Escape and Bronco Sport offerings, Ford’s Maverick is a commendable little pickup. It handles a lot like a car, rides comfortably and is thoughtfully packaged.

What’s more, the Maverick uses an independent rear suspension setup, which gives it considerable headroom within which to improve its dynamics. In other words, Ford’s product team started from a strong position in its quest to extract a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

To get there, the engineering team lowered the standard Maverick’s ride height by half an inch up front and 1.1 inches in the rear. The also specified a torque-vectoring rear differential and larger front brake rotors with calipers from the European version of the Focus ST. A bigger radiator, along with the transmission cooler from the Maverick’s towing package are fitted too.

Powertrain and Fuel Economy

Power is sourced from Ford’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which in this configuration, is good for 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The all-wheel drive Lobo’s 7-speed automatic transmission, which uses paddle shifters on the steering wheel, is the same unit as the 8-speed employed by standard models.

Ford gives the Maverick Lobo a sportier look and feel by lowering the truck in the front and rear.

However, it has been set up to skip second gear to help the Lobo perform in a more sporting manner. Fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg in the city, 30 on the highway and 24 combined. This proved pretty accurate, as I saw an overall rating of 23 mpg.

Interior Accommodations

“My” Maverick Lobo featured blue and lime accent stitching on the Activex-upholstered seats. (Ford’s synthetic leather-like upholstery.) It also had the LOBO logo embossed into the front seat backs.

The rear seat flipped up to provide hidden storage to keep smaller valuables out of view of would-be purloiners. With that said, the interior treatment signals built to a price, owing to its abundance of textured plastic surfaces. Thankfully though, they were molded into handsome shapes.

Another saving grace, the Maverick’s ergonomics were quite good. All secondary controls were easily located and fell readily to hand. What’s more, ingress and egress were quite good, with reasonable leg, shoulder and hip room at the four main seating positions. These factors, when bundled with the Maverick’s quiet and comfortable ride quality, made driving the compact Ford pickup more pleasant than I expected it to be.

The Maverick’s obligatory center stack touchscreen interface measured eight inches diagonally and delivered timely responses to inputs.

Comfort, Convenience & Safety Tech

Here, it should be noted I was driving the upper-trim Lobo. Key features included heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power-sliding rear window and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. The Maverick’s obligatory center stack touchscreen interface measured eight inches diagonally and delivered timely responses to inputs.

An additional digital monitor, which could be reconfigured in a number of different ways to monitor the Ford’s vital functions, resided behind the steering wheel. Both screens offered sharp graphics rendered in an attractive font. Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 and FordPass Connect provided additional smart features.

The former brought automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping and a rearview camera. The latter enabled remote engine start and stop, along with remote door lock and unlock, as well as vehicle location and health alerts, all using my iPhone.

Driving Impressions

The Lobo-specific suspension enhancements improved the Maverick’s agility considerably.

The Lobo-specific suspension enhancements improved the Maverick’s agility considerably. On my favorite twisty road, the little Ford pickup comported itself with the dignity of reasonably capable sport sedan.

Turn-in was accurate and its roadholding inspired considerable confidence. With that said, I do wonder why they equipped the pavement-focused Lobo with a set of all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler tires.

Seems an odd choice, given the Lobo’s mission brief. The Maverick’s handling and braking potential would be even greater with something along the lines of a Michelin Pilot Sport. Granted, the price would be a bit higher, but the little pickup would also be more capable.

Activating the Lobo drive mode let the Maverick vocalize its exhortations with considerably more volume—in a pleasing way. The paddle shifters offered more engagement, allowing me to run the little truck in the lower gears, giving me sharper acceleration off the apexes.

The Lobo mode also activated the Maverick’s torque vectoring algorithm, which helped bring the Ford ‘s rear end around more sharply. Taking advantage of its additional 59 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque over standard Maverick models (191 and 155 vs 250 and 280), the Maverick Lobo scampered from zero to 60 in just under six seconds.

In Summary

As skeptical as I was when I heard the Maverick Lobo was Ford’s effort to make its compact pickup more like a compact sport sedan, they did accomplish that feat. In fact, they did it so well the Maverick Lobo was crowned North American Pickup Truck of the Year when it was introduced.

Lowering the pickup’s ride height, beefing up its brakes and giving it a more aggressive drive mode upped the Maverick’s fun quotient by a significant margin.

Again though, I feel like they missed an opportunity with the tire choice, but hey, that’s why Tire rack exists. Other than that, they can be proud of their accomplishment.

The example of the Ford Maverick Lobo I drove had a base price of $40,750. Its price as tested was $42,445.
