More automakers are adding budget-friendly trims and other vehicle options to their vehicle lineups.
The days of the sub $20,000 car are long over, but it’s no secret that more customers have been feeling the pressure from sticker shock with the average transaction price of a new vehicle being over $50,000. This high price is forcing more buyers to not only go underwater in lease plans, but also consider moving to budget-minded versions of a vehicle as they look for an elusive good deal.
Automakers have been paying attention to this trend and more of them are now preparing a new wave of entry-level models to try and lure in more budget-minded buyers while also countering the effect that soaring automobile prices are having on their bottom line due to inflation and other changing market conditions.

This resurgence comes as automakers are finally getting the message about how rising prices are causing more customers to not buy a new vehicle.
These early confirmations came from several automakers who were present at the annual National Automobile Dealers Association Show in New Orleans with Ram, Mitsubishi, Mini, and Ford all confirming that they will be planning to introduce lower-priced trim levels, special editions, and even revive retired nameplates as they attempt to cushion the bottom ends of their vehicle lineups.
This shift in the respective gameplans of these automakers and countless others come as more customers choose to not buy the most expensive and usually well-equipped version of a vehicle with these vehicles seeing a surge upwards when it comes to pricing. Instead, they are moving into less expensive versions of the same model even if that means sacrificing some standard features to help secure a long-term savings benefit. This has helped these models post very strong sales numbers for 2024 with companies like Ford looking to expand that number with lower-tier models with the firm confirming that it intends to introduce a base version of the Bronco in the future while also boosting production of the F-150 STX and expanding budget options for the Escape and the Explorer.

Budget versions of popular vehicles saw strong sales in 2024 but they face some of the same core challenges as their better equipped counterparts.
While these moves don’t mean the return of the days when the economy car segment was filled to the brim with entries, they do appear to confirm the automakers are taking a new approach to the problem of providing customers value-focused vehicle models. Instead of making new models outright, there appears to be a strong focus on expanding the availability of de-contented versions of familiar models with features being sacrificed for maximum price reductions. This would help automakers save money since it would allow them to use an existing vehicle model for some of these budget trims and eliminate the extreme cost involved with making an entirely new platform from the ground up just for the economy segment.
However, while automakers are just now beginning to reassert themselves in the budget vehicle market, they still face the same common challenges that appear when they are making other versions of a model. For example, inflation is driving up the costs of the vehicles and the components within them and this would also be occurring on the budget end of the new vehicle market. This blunts some of the savings customers can expect ot see if they are willing to go to the lower rungs of the trim ladder for a new vehicle. However, with sales of budget-focused vehicle models expected to grow in the next few years, look for more automakers to jump on the train and make budget-focused versions of their vehicles too.
