Porsche Keeps Shifting … to All-Electric Lineup with End of Gas-Powered Macan

by | July 8, 2024

Porsche augments its move to an all-electric Macan lineup with the discontinuation of the 718 duo, the Boxster and Cayman. Changes begin this fall.

Porsche is going all-electric with its best-selling Macan, with the EV hitting U.S. showrooms soon.

The German sports car maker previously revealed its plans to shift the Macan, the brand’s best-selling vehicle, to an all-electric platform. The first Macan EVs are expected to hit U.S. dealerships before the end of this year. Porsche’s production chief, Albrecht Reimold, confirmed the company plans to end distribution to non-European companies, including the U.S., in 2026.

The Boxster and Cayman are also getting the red light; however, they’ll also be replaced by battery-electric models very soon. The gas-powered versions will end their runs in October 2025, according to previous reports.

Running against the tide

As many automakers slow production of EVs, Porsche is running on a full charge. It may be that the company’s electric versions of vehicles cost more, yet continue to sell in big numbers. The base gas-powered Macan is about $65,000 while the electric version starts at $80,000.

The all-electric Taycan outsold the Boxster/Cayman and Panamera in the first quarter of this year. Second quarter sales results are expected this week. The strategy of pushing ahead with its BEVs, has some wondering if that makes sense as EV sales stagnate.

In the U.S., if you back out Tesla’s declines, EV sales rose 13% during the first quarter. Ford, Hyundai and Kia enjoyed double-digit increases during the quarter.

What’s coming

The end of the 718 models won’t be so pronounced as Porsche officials confirmed the replacements will keep the Cayman and Boxer names. Of course, the Taycan got some serious updates earlier this year.

The new Turbo GT races from 0 to 62 mph time of 2.3 seconds for the new Turbo GT. That drops to 2.2 seconds with the Weissach package.

The company revealed the “most dynamic Taycan of all time” this spring with the debut of the Taycan Turbo GT and the track-ready Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package.

The two new iterations of the Taycan put out more than 1,000 horsepower, however, there is an additional 120 kW of power available for 10 seconds when pushing the button for Attack Mode, which is 50 kW more than other Taycan models.

The end result is a 0 to 62 mph time of 2.3 seconds for the new Turbo GT. That drops to 2.2 seconds with the Weissach package.

This makes the new model one- to two-tenths of a second faster than the Taycan Turbo S. The difference in acceleration from a standstill to 200 km/h is even greater: 6.6 or 6.4 seconds for the Taycan Turbo GT without/with Weissach package, which is up to 1.3 seconds quicker than the Taycan Turbo S. The top speed it about 189 mph.

Porsche officials say the Turbo GT will travel about 345 miles on a full charge, but that’s using Europe’s WLTP standard, which equates to about 300 to 310 miles using the EPA metric, which is closer to real-world results.
