Marking its 30th anniversary, the North American Car and Truck of the Year announced the vehicles in the running for the group’s three coveted awards on Wednesday.
The semifinalists included 10 cars, five trucks and another 10 utility vehicles vying for the attention of NACTOY’s 50 U.S. and Canadian jurors.
Later this year they will winnow the list down to three finalists, the winners in the car, truck and utility vehicle categories to be revealed Jan. 4, 2024.
Originally founded in 1993, NACTOY is considered one of the premier vehicle-of-the-year awards due to its use of 50 U.S. and Canadian auto writers giving it an unusually broad take on the automotive industry.

NACTOY has regularly spotlighted emerging automotive trends. Last year, two of the three winners — Truck of the Year Ford F-150 Lightning and Utility Vehicle of the Year Kia EV6 — were battery powered.
The trend continues
There were eight EVs among the 25 semifinalists announced on Wednesday during the opening ceremonies for the 2023 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
That included the BMW i5 and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 in the Car category. The Truck semifinalists included the Chevrolet Silverado EV. Chevrolet’s Equinox EV and Blaz EV were two of five all-electric models in the Utility Vehicle category. The others were the Genesis Electrified GV70, the Kia EV9 and the Volvo EX30.
The semifinalists also included a number of other “electrified” offerings, including the familiar Toyota Prius hybrid and Prius Prime plug-in hybrid.
General Motors had the most models in the three semifinalist categories, a total of six. Toyota had four, as did Hyundai Motor Group siblings Genesis, Hyundai and Kia. Ford had three.
