SEMA’s Greatest Hits for 2023

by | November 1, 2023

We already told you about the GMC Sierra Grande Concept that is debuting at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, currently taking place in Las Vegas. But it’s far from the only concept making its appearance for the first time. Here’s a quick roundup of other highlights from the show.

2024 Hyundai Kona Jayde

Having just released the all-new Hyundai Kona, the automaker has released this tasty little morsel, created in collaboration with Hyundai parts manufacturer parts supplier MOBIS. Its unique robin’s egg blue color contrasts with its blacked-out trim, Air Design front lip, rocker panels, and rear spoiler. It also wears one-piece 20-inch HRE 520M alloy wheels shod with 235/40/ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S rubber. And credit its Eibach lowering springs for reducing its ride height by two inches. Finally, it’s accessorized with a Vintage Electric Bikes e-bike and a roof-mounted Thule cargo box. Count us smitten.

Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400

Accessorized with Infiniti Motorsports Parts, this Q50 Red Sport 400 is not your dentist’s Infiniti.

Consider its twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine. It’s fitted with a billet-aluminum coolant expansion tank, providing 70% more volume than the factory tank. It also gets an auxiliary intercooler tank, a CARB-approved performance cold-air intake; and a heat exchanger with a thicker core and greater surface area and Infiniti Performance Street brake pads. And there’s been any number of suspension enhancements, including front upper arms, rear traction rods, and end links. The finishing touch is its Infiniti Performance cat-back exhaust, etched with the Infiniti logo. To deal with all of this, it’s shod with 19-inch NISMO LM-RS1 aluminum alloy wheels.

There, you can set up the Kammok Outpost Overland Hammock Stand ithat’s mounted on a Prinsu Roof Rack and carrying a 10-foot long Kammok Roo Double Hammock. Oh, and there’s a 63-quart ARB Elements Weatherproof refrigerator and freezer mounted on a ARB Fridge Slide and Goose Gear Rear Plate System.

2022 Lexus LX 600 Premium AAP Build

Cloaked in an aquamarine body wrap, this LX is ready for a weekend at the lake. It already has an appearance package, so it comes with a matte gray grille, black chrome window trim, black door handles and outside mirrors, black chrome bumper trim, and dark gray roof rails. Its footwear consists of 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires on 18-inch matte gray alloy wheels. Its then fitted with a Kammok Crosswing Car Awning and a Yakima EXO OpenRange Deluxe camp kitchen. Once you’ve eaten, take the Yakima SupDawg stand-up paddleboard and surfboard down from the Prinsu Roof Rack and have some wet fun.

Should you get stuck, you’ll find a DMOS Delta Shovel and ARB TRED Pro recovery boards.

Nissan Forsberg Frontier

Created in association with Forsberg Racing and multi-time Formula Drift champion Chris Forsberg, it boasts a NISMO Off Road Frontier lift kit and high-performance suspension, Yokohama Geolander M/T G003 tires, a NISMO cat-back exhaust and NISMO Axis Truck black wheels. It also wears a host of other NISMO accessories, including its off-road roof rack, 40-inch LED light bar, roof rack flood lights and rock sliders. A Forsberg Racing graphics package finishes the look.

“Racing the Forsberg Frontier Off-Road Race Truck at the NORRA 500 was an exhilarating experience,” said Forsberg. “Nissan and the Forsberg Racing team have created a true beast of a machine.”

Nissan DET Sentra

Nissan’s Sentra Cup spec-racing series, which races modified Nissan Sentras in two Canadian provinces over the course of six weekends, inspired this sweetheart. And it’s coming to the U.S. next year at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut on July 19 and 20.

Using a moniker formerly seen on a number of hot JDM Nissans, DET refers to its to Dual overhead cam, Electronic Fuel Injection and Turbocharger. In this case, it’s a performance-modified turbocharged 2.0-liter engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a stainless-steel NISMO B18 performance exhaust. It also comes with a prototype NISMO coilover suspension with twin-tube shocks and linear-rate springs, new 18-inch NISMO LM-RS6 wheels with Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD09 tires. When it comes time to pilot this beastie, you’ll find its cabin is fitted with Recaro front seats and a NISMO GT shift knob.

Nissan Rugged Rogue

In an attempt to make the Nissan Rogue live up to its name, Nissan has cobbled together the Rugged Rogue. Using the freshly redesigned 2024 Nissan Rogue and adds a NISMO Off Road 3-inch suspension lift kit. There’s a dual center-mounted exhaust and 18-inch NISMO Off Road wheels shod with Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 tires. Then it gets tarted-up with carbon fiber fender flares, a rear spoiler, roof rack, 6-inch round driving lights, front bumper guard, rock rails, a Yakima Highroad mountain bike rack, hood-mounted 4-inch driving lights and roof-mounted kayak.

Inside you’ll find NISMO Off Road high-performance neoprene seat covers, NISMO carbon interior lower door trim, retractable pet divider and all-season floor mats.

Sadly, the engine remains unchanged. But it certainly has the demeanor more fitting of its name.

Toyota Tacoma X-Runner concept

Any number of fun high-performance concepts are on Toyota’s SEMA stand. But the Toyota Tacoma X-Runner concept is the most interesting. Toyota hasn’t announced the return of the Tacoma X-Runner, but it certainly would fit the automaker’s increasingly gih-performance orientation. Debuting in 2005, the Tacoma X-Runner benefited from Bilstein shocks, stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, and a limited-slip rear differential.

While a new Tacoma should reach showrooms in December, it’s not a stretch to think that a performance variant would hit some time after that. This concept seems to indicate as much.

Performance parts

There were also performance announcements of the sort to thrill any performance fan.

Consider Dodge, which announced that it will offer the Hellephant C170 Crate Hemi Engine in the first quarter of 2024. In case you’ve forgotten, that’s the 6.2-liter supercharged powerplant Dodge installs in 1,025-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170. Also being offered at the same time will include the Hellcrate Redeye 6.2L Supercharged Crate Hemi Long Block, Hellcrate 6.2L Supercharged Crate Hemi Long Block, 392 Crate Hemi Long Block, 345 Crate Hemi Long Block, HurriCrate Cat 3 Long Block and the HurriCrate Cat 1 Long Block.

The automaker also said participating Dodge Power Brokers dealerships are also now offering up to $1,000 off the purchase of a Direct Connection Crate Engine through the end of 2023.

Not to be outdone, Ford Motor Co. announced that a supercharger kit will be available for all seventh-generation Ford Mustang models equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 engine, with a Dark Horse-specific supercharger kit to come in the near future. The new 5.0-liter V8 supercharger kit is CARB compliant, comes with a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty and delivers at least 800 horsepower.

“With at least 800 horsepower, this Ford Performance option takes the already-powerful Ford Mustang GT to an extreme level that should satisfy even the most demanding driver,” said Michael Goodwin, product manager.
