Ford is preparing an epic birthday bash to celebrate its 60th birthday

Nearly sixty years ago Ford unveiled the original Ford Mustang which made its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. The coupe helped usher in the muscle car era, and it rapidly became one of Ford’s most popular models in the process.

The company is now preparing to celebrate its 60th anniversary with a special Mustang event at Charlotte Motor Speedway where Mustang owners and fans will get a glimpse of a special edition model built to celebrate this milestone.

In addition to the Dark Horse owners, Ford officials said there will be events for Mustang GT and EcoBoost owners too.

The Mustang has always managed to remain fresh thanks to a simple combination of performance, style, and value. This three-step formula has always allowed it to stay ahead of rivals and become America’s best-selling sports coupe.

Ford will be celebrating the car’s 60th birthday by throwing a special event at Charlotte Motor Speedway for Mustang owners and fans on April 17th. Attendees that make the trek will have the opportunity to meet Ford Performance racing drivers, see custom Mustangs like the Mustang Mach-E 1400 and see Ford’s entire corral of racing Mustangs in one place.

“The popularity of Mustang is rooted in its ability to evoke emotion – whether it’s the roar of the engine or the sight of its iconic silhouette, it sparks a visceral connection,” said Joe Bellino Mustang Brand Manager for North America. “This year we’ll start to connect with Mustang customers in exciting new ways.”

One way that the company is looking to connect with Mustang owners is by introducing an all-new special edition Mustang model to the lineup. Like the 55th anniversary model in 2020, this will be an appearance package for the Mustang with Ford giving observers a taste of what’s to come by showing off the special 60th anniversary badging for the fenders and the rear of the car along with a new vermillion red and ebony black logo that is inspired by similar treatments that were used on the original 1964 show car.

In addition to the new special edition, Ford is also promising a mysterious anniversary-related feature that current-generation Mustang owners will be able to enjoy via an over-the-air software update on April 17th. To receive this feature, owners will have to make sure that the “Automatic Software Updates” function is turned on in the SYNC 4 infotainment system.

The birthday celebrations also coincide with the Mustang becoming America’s best-selling sports coupe with 59,000 of them being sold in 2023. These sales also contributed to Ford selling one million Mustangs during the past decade.

While much of this success was due to the launch of the 2024 Mustang in the U.S. the model also benefitted from losing its two key rivals in the muscle car wars the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger with both models leaving the market in 2024.

“We’ve sold more Mustangs in our history than the population of major cities like Chicago, London, or Seoul,” said Jeff Marentic, General Manager, North America/Global Truck, Family, and Enthusiast Vehicles. “As we get set to celebrate Mustang’s 60th anniversary, that same passion and excitement continues with our seventh-generation Mustang, now headed to customers in 85 markets around the world.”

This global approach will shift into high gear in 2024 when the Mustang makes its way to buyers in China, Europe, South America, and Australia. Ford hopes that this growing global footprint will allow the Mustang to continue generating memories and thrills for years to come.
