German automaker Audi revealed the A6 e-tron as well as the performance-oriented variant, the S6. The brand will bring three versions of the vehicle to the U.S., electing to not bring its Avant models to American roads.
The U.S. will launch with the A6 e-tron, A6 e-tron quattro, and S6 e-tron Sportback variants, officials noted. No Avant models will be available at launch. However, those three options should be plenty of fun and frolic for American drivers, especially with the S6 e-tron Sportback racing from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds using built-in launch control.
The A6 e-tron made its debut as a concept at Auto Shanghai 2021 with officials hoping it would generate enough buzz so it could become part of the company’s e-tron family of EVs — mission accomplished.
Pure Audi
“The A6 e-tron is the first purely electric Audi model available as a Sportback and Avant,” said Gernot Döllner, chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, in a statement.
“Its striking design enables the best aerodynamics in the portfolio and therefore greater efficiency. It will inspire enthusiasm for e-mobility with its long range of well over 700 kilometers (435 miles) and outstanding driving dynamics.”
The new A6 e-tron and S6 e-tron models feature Audi’s classic simple, clean exteriors. The slim daytime running lights let you know what company produced this vehicle. In concert with the wide grille, the new model look low to the ground and athletic
A black mask surrounds the closed and inverted single frame, reflecting the distinct design language of the e-tron models. The main headlights and other functional elements, such as the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) sensors and the air intakes, are integrated into the dark mask, making them almost invisible.
Slippery means miles
The A6 e-tron keeps up the tradition of Audi’s with low coefficient of drag numbers, coming in at 0.21, which is world class. In fact, it the best ever for Audi and currently tops any offering within the VW Group, officials noted. The company estimates it will travel as far as 435 miles, although that is not yet official.
The front is aerodynamically optimized and has air curtains that positively influence the flow around the front and the wheels. The greenhouse is extremely slim, and the roofline slopes towards the rear.
This helps the A6 e-tron and S6 e-tron put up impressive performance numbers. The A6 e-tron RWD races from stop to 60 mph in about 5.2 seconds. However, the quattro model lowers that to 4.3 seconds. Not to be outdone, the S6 e-tron posts an estimated 3.7 second 0-to-60 time using launch control.
The A6 e-tron powertrain produces 362 horsepower with the A6 e-tron quattro coming in at 422 hp. The S6 e-tron is rated at 496 hp and if launch control is used, it jumps to 543 hp. Too bad the Avant models aren’t coming. The vehicles use a 100 kWh battery that can go from a 10% charge to 80% charge in 21 minutes using a DC Fast Charger.
