Koenigsegg Jesko Attack Nabs Lap Record at Laguna Seca

by | August 19, 2024

Koenigsegg’s Jesko Attack hypercar continues to set records wherever it goes with the company confirming that it managed to set a new lap time record at Laguna Seca.

Koenigsegg’s Jesko hypercar made waves when the Swedish hypercar maker revealed it several years ago. The Jesko was supposed to set a new benchmark of performance for the company’s products thanks in part to its 1,600 hp twin-turbo V8. This includes setting an impressive list of records with the Jesko setting the pace for lap times all over the world.

This includes its newest record with the company confirming that the Jesko managed to get a new lap record at Laguna Seca as the hypercar wars enter a new gear with more models embracing electrification to push the performance envelope even further.

Jesko Attack threads the corkscrew for new record

The announcement came during Monterey Car Week with Koenigsegg opting to not unveil a new vehicle. Instead, the company used the venue as an opportunity to reveal the record which was set at California’s Laguna Seca raceway. The Jesko is available in two configurations with the record being set by the Attack variant which gets a more extensive aero kit that boosts downforce but causes it to not go as fast as a Jesko Absolut model.

The Jesko Attack used in the record attempt at Laguna Seca was driven by test driver Markus Lundh who is no stranger to setting records in the Jesko with Lundh also being behind the wheel for the four speed records that he set in an Absolut model back in July. Lunch managed to secure a lap time of 1.24.86 which is a new record for homologated production cars. The new lap time also beats the old track record by 0.58 seconds which was set by a Czinger 21C back in 2021 and Lundh’s record is even more impressive since the company admitted after he set the record he never had any real-world experience on the 2.2 mile long circuit and had only driven it prior in video games.

Hypercar segment entering new territory

The Jesko’s latest record comes as the hypercar segment is entering uncharted territory with a growing pool of models embracing electrification to boost performance and their capabilities even further. Rival Rimac unveiled the Nevera R which makes 2,078 combined hp and will also be chasing records like the Jesko. In addition to chasing records, many of these hypercar entries are also experimenting with new powertrains and other advanced technology.

The infusion of new technology into these cars has made the segment more competitive than ever and some of the advanced hardware that’s making their debut on these cars might eventually trickle down into production vehicles with some of the bigger car companies using data that it gets from hypercar models to refine and prepare these technologies for the mass market. This is nothing new either, with older supercar and hypercar models debuting innovative technology that eventually made their way into mainstream models after they proved their worth in these vehicles.
