2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe Channels Its Bigger Cousins For Redesign

by | November 12, 2024

BMW hones the 2-Series Gran Coupe for 2025 with new styling and higher levels of technology and performance.

BMW debuted the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe ahead of its official launch next year.

When BMW unveiled the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe back in 2020, the model was the latest in BMW’s lineup of four-door coupes with the Gran Coupe family attempting to expand BMW’s presence into a relatively small niche market. However, BMW received complaints from fans who had plenty to say about the model’s bulbous styling and the fact that the front-wheel drive Gran Coupe cost more than a rear-wheel drive 2-Series coupe.

BMW is out to change the narrative with the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe which corrects some of these flaws while also emerging with more technology and performance to try and lure in more buyers.

2024 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe - interior

The 2024 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will feature a heavily upgraded interior.

While the exterior styling of the 2025 model is still a bit awkward to look at, BMW stylists did their best to make the four-door coupe look better than before. Unlike the outgoing one, the 2025 model draws more of its styling inspiration from bigger BMW models with the BMW 5-Series being perhaps the most visible source of inspiration with the front and rear lighting sharing some similarity with the 5-Series. The Gran Coupe also shares some details with the international market 1-Series coupe but those items will be harder to spot.

The new shape also hides a slight increase in length with the 2025 model being 0.7 inches longer than before while also gaining an extra inch in height with the latter item being noticeable when you’re inside. All Gran Coupes get the M Sport treatment which adds black exterior trim and larger air intakes in the lower front bumper. BMW says that the grille surrounds can be illuminated too but buyers looking to light up the night will have to wait a bit since the company confirmed the option will not be appearing at launch and will join the options list later on.

The interior gets a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a slightly bigger 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the screen setup being similar to what we have seen before in other BMW models. The cabin also comes with plenty of standard equipment with all Gran Coupes getting heated and massaging front seats and illuminated pieces of trim. The shift lever has been replaced with a small toggle switch and the Gran Coupe also gets a blind spot monitoring system, lane keep assist, and a suite of parking sensors.

Stronger performance gives this Gran Coupe more pep

The Gran Coupe will be AWD only at first but a front-wheel drive 228 model will come later.

Performance for the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with the heavily revised engine supposedly being more fuel efficient than before. It’s also more powerful but performance will depend on what trim level you get. The base 228 gets 241 horsepower while the spicier M235 model gets 312 hp a small increase from before though torque does go down to 295 lb-ft versus the 302 lb-ft it had prior.

The eight-speed automatic has been replaced with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. BMW says the chassis has also been reworked to provide sharper handling with engineers not only stiffening certain parts of the structure but also reworking the suspension components. Adaptive suspension is standard on all models but BMW says that passive units can also be equipped at no extra charge. The M Sport treatment also gives the car stronger brakes which helps improve stopping behavior.

BMW says that the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe will go on sale next March but all-wheel drive equipped versions of the GC will arrive first with these models starting at $42,775 and $50,675 respectively. These models will eventually be joined by a front-wheel drive version of the 228 which will appear in the summer of 2025 with those models starting at $40,775.
