Porsche Going Hybrid With New 911 Turbo S; Gas With New Crossover

by | August 4, 2025

Porsche is stretching out its planned shift to EV and will launch a new gas-powered crossover by 2028, it confirmed, replacing the current ICE version of Macan. Porsche also remains committed to hybrid technology and will go with a gas-electric package when the high-performance 911 Turbo S makes its anticipated debut later this year. Headlight.News has more.

Porsche takes its time rolling out new 911 variants, like this 2025 911 Carrera GTS.

In typical fashion, Porsche likes to keep a steady stream of new variants flowing out of its product pipeline. And it’s set to bring out a significant one late this year, an all-new 911 Turbo S.

CEO Oliver Blume offered up some insight into what’s coming during the automaker’s earnings call, revealing that the 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S will adopt a hybrid drivetrain.

Separately, Blume offered up some surprising news on the crossover front. While the plan called for the Porsche Macan to be offered only in all-electric form, the CEO said an entirely new, gas-powered CUV will be added to the line-up no later than 2028.

What’s new: 911 Turbo S

Expect more horsepower – and instant torque – from the hybrid 911 Turbo S.

In its current configuration, the 2025 911 Turbo S uses a turbocharged 3.8-liter flat-6 gas engine making 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels through an 8-speed double-clutch transmission.

That package saw the specs jump by 60 hp and 37 lb-ft. There seems little reason to believe that the 2026 Turbo S won’t get another big bump, but the other plus is the fact that electric motors deliver essentially all their torque the moment they start spinning. Now, there will be a weight penalty from the motors and a 1.9-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. But that should be more than offset when it comes to launch power.

We could also see a big improvement in fuel economy considering the outgoing 911 Turbo S could only muster 14 mpg city, 20 highway and 16 combined, according to the EPA.

Changing strategies

Oliver Blume

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has been shifting the brand’s electrification plans.

Porsche remains committed to going electric, according to Blume, but plans have changed to reflect the slowdown in EV sales growth.

For one thing, Porsche has pushed back the rollout of the all-electric replacements for the 918 Boxster and Cayman models. And it will continue offering both all-electric and gas-powered versions of the compact Macan crossover for the time being – though the plan remains to phase out the internal combustion model over the next couple years.

But Porsche apparently has an ICE alternative in the works – a seemingly good move considering the slow start the Macan Electric is off to.

Porsche New CUV

Porsche’s new CUV will be offered in gas and hybrid forms.

Porsche is “evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with combustion and hybrid powertrains,” according to Blume, who added that “We won’t be later than 2028 with the B-SUV ICE and hybrid version.”

The CEO didn’t have much else to say about the project, though he did note it would be “differentiated from the BEV Macan.”

Expectations are that Porsche will follow the same formula as it has in the past with Macan, sharing the new crossover’s underlying architecture with the latest-generation Audi Q5.
