First Drive: 2026 Nissan Sentra

by | November 18, 2025

Nissan is looking for a winner — several actually — and the newly remade 2026 Sentra may be just that. Recently, I spent a few hours in the top trim SL model, and came away impressed.

Nissan’s remade the Sentra for 2026, and brought back the SL to be its top-line trim level.

On the outside, the Sentra gets a major update with a more streamlined look than its predecessor, including a new front end, with slit-like headlights and more contemporary feel overall for this evolution of the V-motion grille.

It comes in four trim levels, S, SV, SR and SL, which returns for 2026. The SL certainly looks like the premium model with its body-color-matching molding on the grill and 17-inch alloy wheels. No one’s gonna confuse it with an Infiniti, but it looks like the older sibling who has it all together compared to the other Sentra models.

Power?

Under the hood is the same 2.0-liter 4 cylinder putting out 149 horsepower that was in the previous iteration. It’s tied to a CVT that is, well, better than expected.

The new exterior look is clean and contemporary — ideal for a compact sedan.

The key to the Sentra SL — SR is a sport-oriented model that offers a different experience — us using the different drive modes. If you drive this car around in Eco mode, you’re likely to be frustrated. However, bump it into sport mode and you get a tossable little car that seems to enjoy being pushed around. It was a pleasant surprise.

Cool cabin

Where the Sentra SR shines is inside. It features quilted TailorFit synthetic leather seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a power sunroof. Nissan’s zero-gravity seats are among the best in the industry and didn’t fall short during my time in the car.

The 2026 Nissan Sentra SR interior features twin 12.3-inch displays.

It’s a bright, spacious cabin. I climbed into the back seat and while I don’t think I’d want to road-trip across country back there, for a couple hours, I’d be fine. For the record, I’m just shy of 5-foot-10.

That spaciousness extends to the trunk as well. I saw a small reporter climb into it, but I can say confidently a couple sets of golf clubs and a few overnight bags would fit just fine.

Tech forward

Additionally, the SR gets dual 12.3-inch displays that make it easy to see how fast you’re driving, what you’re listening to, and where you’re going. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make you feel at home, and the wireless charger is also standard equipment across all lines.

You get a fair bit of room in the back seat of the new Sentra, although a cross-country trip might be tough.

It’s loaded with advanced driver assistance tech, including Intelligent Cruise Control, which comes standard in all models. The SR gets Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, which is as close to hands-free as you get in a Nissan.

To buy or not to buy

When looking for a new vehicle, the one group no one gravitates to, but should, is the compact car segment. You get more bang for your buck in that group than any other — and you spend fewer bucks to boot. The new Sentra is one of the reasons why.

It’s nice looking, roomy and loaded with technology. Prices on the base model start at $22,400. Our completely loaded, top-of-the-line SR comes in around $32K. For a young buyer or someone older who wants a second car, this one merits a look.
