Off-road enthusiasts must be getting really demanding these days. I mean, if the new Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ is any indication, they want to scale steep inclines and ford rivers while the seat massagers are keeping them relaxed.
The 2025 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ gives buyers an impressive mix of off-road capability and luxury touches.
And while I did spend a week behind the wheel of the GX 550, I didn’t crawl over any rocks or travel the path less taken. However, I did attempt to use the seat massagers often enough to wear them out. I failed.
Quite a looker
However, our Nori Green Pearl test model with its 18-inch black alloy wheels and 33-inch tires and roof rails complete with the matching rack, certainly looks like it could handle some rock crawling then take you somewhere dinner that requires men to wear a jacket.
For the off-roading, the Overtrail+ trim adds real off-road extras like a limited-slip locking center differential, larger all-terrain tires, detachable front and rear stabilizer bars, and a host of off-road electronic aids.
Good power

Again, no off-roading during my week, but I can say it’s great in the snow. In regular conditions, it handles well for a big vehicle and there is more than enough power to handle any situation.

Move inside and you get an impressive mix of luxury, technology and comfort. Heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are covered in the brand’s NuLuxe faux leather, which is durable and cleans up well.
Our tester offered a few extra items I feel like are musts if you own a Lexus, starting with the Mark Levinson audio system, which is among the best. The head-up display is large and easy to see, providing plenty of information, including navigation instructions.

The standard 14-inch touchscreen makes it easy to handle navigation and other infotainment functions. When it comes to screens, I usually think bigger is better and this one certainly fits that mantra.
It’s rare that I deal with the advanced safety systems, but the Lexus Safety System Plus 3.0 offers peace of mind, especially in concert with the full-time four-wheel drive.
Going big
What’s a do-it-all luxury off-roader stuffed to the gills with options cost these days? In this case, $86,365 including the destination fees. You can pay less, the GX starts at about $66,000. However, when it comes to a vehicle like this, go big … or go home.
