Volkswagen Brings a Redesigned 2027 Atlas to NY Auto Show

by | April 1, 2026

The Beetle may be the iconic Volkswagen but when it comes to today’s market, the big Atlas underscores the transformation the German automaker has gone through in recent years. So, it’s no surprise VW pulled out all the stops when it came to developing the second-generation Atlas that made its debut at the New York International Auto Show. Headlight.News has more.

Measuring nearly 17 feet, bumper-to-bumper, the Volkswagen Atlas is by far the biggest non-commercial vehicle the automaker has ever offered in the U.S. And it’s no surprise it was named after the mythological figure that carried the weight of the world on its shoulders.

When it launched in the 2017 model year, VW was struggling to rebuild a reputation not only damaged by its diesel emissions scandal but limited by its lack of a 3-row SUV. Atlas helped on both counts, quickly becoming one of its strongest-selling product lines – further helped with the addition of a performance R-Line package and the 3-row Atlas Sport.

But a lot has changed over the past decade and the big SUV faces tough new competition, notably including the latest versions of the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade – which took back-to-back wins as North American Utility Vehicle of the Year in 2025 and 2026. So, VW has a lot riding on the second-generation Atlas making its debut this week at the New York International Auto Show.

What’s new

2027 VW Atlas - noseVW teased the launch of a second-gen Atlas last month, albeit carefully concealing key design details under a colorful wrap. The brand’s news conference in New York gave us a full look at the changes it’s made. It also dropped a significant surprise. There’d be concerns that there’d be no hybrid for Atlas at a time when key competitors – notably the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride – were adding those high-mileage options. Now, we’ve learned, there will be an Atlas hybrid. But we’ll have to wait for the mid-cycle refresh, around the end of this decade, for it to arrive.

From a design perspective, the 2027 Atlas doesn’t stray very far from the original, adding a modest one inch to its overall length.

Even so, VW said all sheet metal but for the roof, have been revised. The SUV features double-stacked headlights and a new, illuminated VW badge on the grille. There’s a new spoiler and flush tailgate, as well as cross-body taillamps.

Depending upon trim and options, Atlas will be offered with 18 through 21-inch wheels.

Interior update

2027 VW Atlas - interiorAs with the existing Atlas, the SUV will be offered in a 3-row configuration. An updated 2-row Atlas Sport is set to follow, likely debuting sometime in calendar year 2027, an insider said.

The biggest updates to the 2027 Atlas can be found in the cabin. That starts with larger digital displays backed by an upgraded infotainment system. The infotainment screen is 12.9 inches on the base package, 15 inches on others, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Volkswagen has some catching up to do there. Wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard across the range. Wireless smartphone charging will be available, if not standard.

There’s also been some updating on the creature comfort side, with massaging seats up front and ventilated second-row seats. Moving to the shifter to the steering column frees up more storage space.

Updated safety technology is also a certainty as VW can’t be seen slipping behind import competitors such as Hyundai, Kia, Toyota or Honda.

2027 VW Atlas - preview front 3-4

VW last month showed off this disguised version of the 2027 Atlas.

The 2027 take on the Volkswagen Atlas continues to be based on the automaker’s EQB EVO platform.

That offers the opportunity to use several different powertrain packages but the automaker is starting out with just one package, an updated version of the current model’s 2.0-liter inline-four. It gets a bump of 13 horsepower, to 282, while torque remains 258 pound-feet.

The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic and is available in both front- and all-wheel-drive. Fuel economy numbers weren’t released during the VW reveal.

As to the hybrid, Automotive News noted that VW Group of America CEO Kjell Gruner has said the brand is working on conventional, rather than plug-in hybrids.

Expect to see a hybrid version when VW launches a mid-cycle update of Atlas.

Critical timing

Volkswagen clearly needs to update Atlas which has gone without a major overhaul longer than is the norm these days.

Sales of the 3-row SUV peaked at 81,508 in 2019, according to company data. That dipped to 75,516 in 2024, falling another 5.9%, to 71,044 last year. It, nonetheless, remained the automaker’s second best-selling model in the U.S., just behind Tiguan’s sales of 78,621 in 2025.

Atlas Cross Sport, meanwhile, has seen an even sharper decline, U.S volume down 18.8% last year, to 31,564.
