Usually at the end of the year, there’s a push put on by a certain electric vehicle maker to sell as many of its EVs as possible. This generally includes price cuts to entice buyers. And while that EV maker might still do it, it’s another automaker looking to move some EVs: Toyota. The company cut prices on its bZ4X by as much as $6,000.
Upon further review, it’s not the 2024 model year bZ4Xs they’re looking to sell, it’s the 2025s. Toyota’s also adding its popular Nightshade package to the list of buyer options on the EVs.
It also adds more standard driver assistance technology on the Limited grade including Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Alert. The bZ4X can travel up to an EPA-estimated 252 miles on a single charge for the front-wheel drive version.
Toyota’s late to the electric vehicle party, preferring to expand its hybrid lineup at the insistence of former CEO Akio Toyoda. He was critical of the industry’s rush to convert to electric vehicles, preaching instead to move in a more deliberate manner.
As a result, while many automakers were proclaiming their conversion to an all-electric — or at least primarily electric — portfolio, Toyota’s got the bZ4X, which is builds in partnership with Subaru, which calls its version the Solterra. Solterra sales were up 13.2% last month and 42.5% through the first 11 months, or 11,282 vehicles.

What’s the cost?
The move to cut $6,000 off the price of the new model year bZ4X pushes the price below $40,000. The price cut results in a window sticker price of $37,070 on the XLE FWD grade, a 14% drop.
The XLE AWD grade’s MSRP starts at $39,150. The feature packed Limited grades also see an MSRP reduction, with models starting at $41,800 (FWD), a price reduction of $5,380. The 2025 bZ4X is expected to start arriving at Toyota dealerships nationwide in early 2025.
There’s no word yet on whether or not Subaru is also going to cut prices on the Solterra. The 2024 price begins at $44,995 — unchanged from 2023.
Beginning of a trend
Typically Tesla announces price cuts or other incentives to drive end-of-year sales as CEO Elon Musk seeks to set another annual sales record, but he hasn’t done so yet. However, there may be a push during the next six weeks to sell as many EVs as possible.
Incoming President Donald Trump said during his campaign he wants to end the $7,500 federal incentives for electric vehicles. And with Musk acting as a leading adviser to the administration telling him it’s a good idea, it appears there is a limited time to get any type of federal assistance.
Edmunds analysts note that consumers might want to move up their purchasing timelines in light of the uncertainty surrounding the incoming administration’s expected policy changes.
“It’s impossible to predict which policy changes might be implemented starting in January, but if you know you’re going to need a new vehicle in 2025 and prefer to hedge your bets, it wouldn’t hurt to start shopping now,” said Ivan Drury, Edmunds’ director of insights. “In particular, if you’re in the market for an EV, acting within the next month is probably a smart move.”
