Volkswagen’s Reborn Microvan, the ID.Buzz, Will Start at $61,545

by | August 21, 2024

It’s been a decade’s long wait but Volkswagen is finally ready to bring the replacement for its iconic Microbus back to the U.S. market. And while the original might have been an affordable people-mover, buyers of the new VW ID.Buzz will have to reach deeper into their pockets, the all-electric model starting at $61,545.

Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz.

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz has been on sale in Europe for more than a year but it’s just getting ready for its U.S. introduction, the automaker finally releasing pricing for the all-electric minivan.

Three different versions of the ID.Buzz will be available in the U.S. but they’ll all have some basic details in common, starting with a three-row cabin and a 91 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack capable of delivering at least 231 miles per charge, depending upon the drivetrain configuration.

Pricing won’t be cheap, the ID.Buzz Pro S model starting at $61,545 – which includes a $1,550 delivery fee. But even that base model will be reasonably will-equipped, with features like wireless smartphone charging and heated, ventilated and massaging first row seats. Here’s what else we know about the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

Filling a long-vacant gap

Old VW Microbuses at Buzz Launch 6-23

A collection of old VW Microbuses were displayed by owners at the ID.Buzz launch in June 2023.

Volkswagen was an iconic brand during the 1960s and 1970s with its snug little Beetle and the bigger Microbus. After that minivan was dropped, however, VW struggled for decades to find a true replacement. It rolled out an assortment of concept vehicles but only came up with the right formula by going with an all-electric drivetrain, a concept version of what has become the ID.Buzz introduced a full seven years ago.

VW officials insist they are “not making” another Microbus. Jozef Kaban, the design chief who oversaw the project, said the goal was “transferring the genes and stylistic elements of that iconic vehicle into the digital era.”

What the German automaker has come up with finally made its debut in California – of course – during a well-attended event in June 2023. A production version soon rolled into European dealerships. But Americans have had to wait until now to finally start ordering the ID.Buzz.

What’s new

2025 VW ID Buzz - copper interior

The 2025 VW ID Buzz will be offered with three interior choices, including this copper scheme.

The European version of the minivan is a two-row model that, at the low end, doesn’t offer much in the way of features or range. The American model is, to start with, a much more lavishly equipped product only available in a three-row configuration.

To add the third row, VW stretched the wheelbase by 9.8 inches, the overall length by 10, to 192.4 inches, nose-to-tail. It’s a wide package, at 77.9 inches. Overall, it’s about the size of the three-row Volkswagen Atlas. Unlike that SUV, Buzz gets sliding rear doors and windows that slide horizontally.

Switching to an all-electric platform – shared with other Volkswagen EVs such as the ID.4 crossover – allows for a cavernous interior with a flat load floor. Buyers will have a choice of a seven-seat layout, six if they opt for center-row captain’s chairs.

The interior design has a lot in common with the other members of the Volkswagen ID family of EVs. Like the original ID.4, the digital gauge cluster is mounted atop the steering wheel. There’s a new, 12.9-inch landscape-oriented infotainment screen, meanwhile. And, in response to complaints about that original model, VW has added standalone controls for the climate system.

Drivetrain

For 2025, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz will be offered with two drivetrain options. Both will share a 91-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The Pro S model will be offered solely in a rear-wheel-drive configuration, a single motor producing 282 horsepower and delivering up to 234 miles per charge, according to the EPA.

The Pro S Plus adds an all-wheel-drive option that, with its second motor, makes a combined 335 hp. Surprisingly, the EPA range estimate only drops to 231 miles.

Pricing and features

  • 2025 VW ID Buzz - dune interior

A dune interior is one of three options for ID.Buzz buyers.

Pro S starts at $61,545 – all pricing including a $1,550 delivery fee. For a “base” model it’s surprisingly well-equipped. There’s that 12.9-inch touchscreen and the heated, ventilated, and cooling front seats. Add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, onboard WiFi and a wireless smartphone charger. The audio system has nine speakers and there’s a 3-zone climate control. There’s a 110-volt outlet up front and the minivan gets VW’s IQ.Drive with active cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and other smart safety features. Perhaps the only disappointment budget-minded buyers might face is the fact that this package only will be available in silver, black or white.

  • Pro S Plus jumps to $65,045 and adds a much broader color palette including hues such as Pomelo Yellow, Cherry Red and Cabana Blue. And, for a $995 upcharge, buyers will be able to order a two-tone paint job. Three interior colors will be available. Add features such as a head-up display, a surround-view camera display, and a 14-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system. The AWD system becomes an option and includes standard second-row captain’s chairs – which will be optional on FWD versions.

1st Edition

There are still more options on the Pro S Plus, such as a Flexboard which adds some storage bins and gives a flat floor when the seats are folded down – perfect for those who might want to use the ID.Buzz as a camper. Also, VW will offer an electrochromic panoramic sunroof for $1,495. With a touch of a button it can switch from opaque to transparent and back.

Those and other options will be included in the 2025 VW ID.Buzz 1st Edition – which comes in at $67,045. As the name suggests, this model will be offered only during the minivan’s first year on the market. Add to the package special wheels and badging and other features.

Oh, and one last note: those who have been anxiously waiting for the ID.Buzz to finally go on sale will still have to wait a bit. For now, the automaker only says that it will reach U.S. showrooms “later this year.”
