Jeep Teases Next Generation Compass, Will be Built on New STLA Medium Platform

by | October 7, 2024

Jeep provides the first preview of the next-generation Compass as it prepares to reassert itself in the compact CUV wars to help give the brand a much-needed sales boost.

Jeep teased the next generation Compass via this lone teaser rendering.

Jeep like the rest of Stellantis needs a new sales hit. The brand has seen its sales slide in recent years with the Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee, and even the iconic Wrangler all seeing their respective sales slide over the last few years. The Jeep Compass was supposed to be the brand’s new gateway model after the Renegade was axed but it has been off to a slow start and is also suffering declining sales.

The brand is now attempting to solve the problem with the next-generation COmpass which will embrace Jeep’s core roots while also giving the model a much-needed update to help it stay in the game against some of the segment’s best including rivals from Toyota and Chevrolet.

Blockier styling will define Compass reboot

The new model is trading its rounded styling for blockier elements while the new STLA Medium Platform will give it a wide range of propulsion options.

This glimpse at the Compass comes in the form of a lone teaser rendering, but the shadowy image does provide some clues to what Jeep is attempting to do when it comes to revamping the CUV. A big change is that the mode pitches its rounded front-end styling and appears to adopt a blocier front end which is similar to what the Renegade had when it was in production. The headlights will also be narrower and the rendering shows a floating roofline and a reworked C-Pillar to help give the Compass the illusion of having increased length.

The rear of the Compass is also slated to get changes but while we’ll have to wait until Jeep hooses to show off more angles to get a better sends of what’s going on back there, the rendering does show that the lighting elements will be edgier and the rear end itself will be stubbier than before. In addition to the rendering itself, Jeep also used the opportunity to claim that the Compass will be built on the new STLA Medium platform with the brand saying the new architecture  “a variety of propulsion options from fully electric to hybrid to internal combustion.” This would seemingly indicate that an EV version will be sold alongside ICE models but it remains to be seen if it will be available at launch or if it will be coming later on in the Compass’s production run.

Debut could be sooner than many expected

The Compass’s debut could happen as early as November as Stellantis continues to struggle with slumping sales.

The next-generation Compass could be making its debt sooner than expected with UK publication Auto Express recently interviewing Jeep’s head of British operations Kris Cholmondeley who indicated that the next-generation Compass is slated to make its debut in November. As mentioned, Jeep is in need of sales, and the Compass would allow the brand to maintain access to a lucrative profit stream especially in a hotly contested segment where every sale counts.

It also doesn’t hurt either that the next generation Compass will be part of a broader global plan with the next generation version’s STLA platform also being shared with the Peugeot 5008 EV. The new Compass will reportedly be built at the Mirafiori plant in Italy but expect U.S. production to not begin until sometime after 2026 due to these models needing minor revisions to comply with U.S. regulations.
