A Week With: 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE

by | March 6, 2026

Making more out of less. That should be Toyota’s real motto, and the latest example of that is the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE. The latest crossover creation from the automaker reveals just how good it is at taking what it already has and creating something new and excellent.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE AWD comes in a new color for this year: Cavalry Blue.

The Corolla has been around forever. It’s actually Toyota’s best-selling vehicle — ever. Great fuel economy and reliability early on have been augmented with clever styling and loads of technology have kept it at the top of the compact car mountain. So when the powers that be decided its new compact crossover would adopt the name, the stakes and expectations were high.

A week in a Calvary Blue hybrid XSE should be enough to convince just about anyone that expectations have been exceeded.

Good looks

Exterior styling is always tough in the compact crossover segment because whatever you’re making needs to be different from the competition without looking like some designer’s acid trip found its way to the production line.

The Corolla Cross manages to stand apart from competitors like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, among others, but hew close to the actual Corolla and the rest of the Toyota lineup so it looks like a family of vehicles. Now why all of the front ends of recent Toyota’s must look the exact same, I’m unsure, but that’s a different story.

The Corolla Cross manages to stand apart from competitors like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, among others.

If they’re all going to look alike, they should at least be good-looking and, well, they are. The Corolla Cross comes with two different front fascia treatments depending upon you’re driving the gas-only or hybrid version. Since we had the Hybrid XSE variant, our tester came with a color-matched grille that actually makes it look a bit smaller, but also more attractive than its gas-powered sibling.

A pair of de rigueur slit-like headlamps help create a nice shoulder crease connecting the front end to the rear end. That line adds a bit of width allowing for slightly flared fenders that make it look athletic, which as I’ll cover later, the Corolla Cross Hybrid actually is.

The little ute is cool-looking package that whispers that it’s stylish rather than trying to shout it. And if you have to yell to tell people what you are … you’re actually not.

Cool cabin

Slide behind the wheel of this little hybrid and you are the nexus of style, comfort, technology and simplicity. First, getting in and out of this compact cruiser is much easier than expected. I’m a bigger guy — not taller, lol, just bigger — and little vehicles almost always require some level of yoga-like contortion to get in and that wasn’t so in the Corolla Cross.

The XSE comes standard with Toyota’s SofTex trim. The black trim was accented with contrasting Cavalry Blue stitching and stripes on the seats. It’s a very appealing combo, that makes it look a bit more upscale than expected. The front seats are powered and heated — the steering wheel is heated too — and are very comfortable. Taking the Corolla Cross on a long trip wouldn’t be a problem in these seats.

It’s also pretty airy, the large power moonroof helps with the brightness level. Also there’s just enough … stuff to allow you do handle your day-to-day errands and commuting without all of it taking up the space for people. For example, the heated seats and steering wheel are controlled by simple switches in the center console where the wireless charging pad is. It’s out of the way AND easy to see. It’s like everything else in there: clean, clear and close.

The infotainment system features Toyota’s native system, which is … fine. Fortunately, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the 10.25-inch screen is perfect for them. However, the volume controls for the system are two buttons at the base of the screen … c’mon now! Don’t you know Toyota?!? The world wants a volume knob and the Corolla Cross shouldn’t be an exception. That issue is further highlighted by the fact there are two knobs just below it to control the cabin temperature!

The rest of the controls are buttons, which are easy to read, which you’ll need to spend some time doing before you climb behind the wheel so you’re not trying to read and drive. They’re not complicated and a 30-second scan should make you expert enough to drive safely.

There’s enough room in the second row for two adults to sit comfortably, although I’m not sure I’d want to do that for more than an hour or two. The space for people is decent, as is the space for things. In fact, the cargo area behind the second row is surprisingly large and I believe one could fit a set of golf clubs crosswise in the back. If not, folding down one of the 60/40 split second row seats allows for longer items, like a couple of golf bags, to fit nicely.

Power and safety

The Corolla Cross Hybrid model features Toyota’s 5th Generation Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicle system and standard Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and three electric motors. The drivetrain is an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission.

Toyota says the result is a combined output of 196 horsepower and an 8 second zero-to-60 time and an impressive manufacturer estimated 42 combined mpg rating. I always felt like there was always more than enough power available and the Corolla Cross never felt like it was straining. And despite it using a CVT, I never felt like it was searching for a gear or stuck too long in one. To be fair, CVTs are getting better overall, but this one is the best of the bunch I’ve tested.

The XSE comes standard with Toyota’s SofTex trim. The black trim was accented with contrasting Cavalry Blue stitching and stripes on the seats.

Additionally, there is an EV-only mode that helps with initial burst from the stop light or if you just don’t want to use any gas around town. The standard AWD on the XSE model is nice, although I didn’t really need it during my week in the car. Toyota calls it “fun to drive” and while “fun” is a relative term, it’s a tossable little ride that didn’t mind being pushed a bit. For the price, which we’ll get to soon, the level of responsiveness was a pleasant surprise.

If you’re going to push it around occasionally, knowing there are plenty of safety features on it is some comfort. Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 is standard equipment, which includes the STAR Safety System. The STAR safety system features Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Smart Stop Technology and Electronic Brake-force Distribution.

Additionally, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on the XSE, as is Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking. All grades come with nine airbags throughout the cabin standard to help protect occupants.

Would I?

Good looks. Good fuel economy. Good technology. Enough room for four adults and it’ll carry a couple of sets of golf clubs (Spring is coming!) or plenty of groceries and some luggage. Plus, the starting price for the Hybrid XSE AWD is $33,430 plus $1,450 in destination fees and you’ve got a pretty nice package.

It’s not the cheapest vehicle in the segment, but Toyota’s keep their value better than the cheaper models … as long as I can get it in Cavalry Blue, I would definitely put it on my “must consider” list.
