Kia Reveals “Affordable” EV3 at NY Auto Show

by | April 1, 2026

While many of its competitors are rolling back their battery-electric plans, Kia is moving ahead – and its betting an affordable offering could win over skeptical American consumers. Headlight.News was on hand for the debut of the new Kia EV3 at the New York International Auto Show.

While some might question whether it’s just an April Fool’s joke, the automaker said it seriously believes it can carve out a market for an affordable battery-electric vehicle despite the plunge in demand since Congress phased out federal tax credits last September.

“The Kia EV3 represents a bold step forward in our commitment to making electric mobility accessible to more Americans,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America.

What’s new

2027 Kia EV3 - sideThe original EV3 concept was unveiled in 2023. But a lot has happened since then, most notably the sharp falloff in EV demand since last autumn. The industry has broadly pulled back on aggressive EV rollout plans, but a handful of manufacturers continue to move forward. That includes Kia which most recently launched its three-row EV9 and is now focusing on the “affordable” EV segment.

The Korean carmaker isn’t yet revealing what it will charge but industry analysts estimate the 2027 EV3 will start in the low to mid-$30,000 range.

For its part, Kia isn’t trying to position the new model as a bargain entry, however. “With its striking geometric design inspired by EV9, advanced technology, and spacious interior, the EV3 brings the innovation of our EV lineup into an entry EV SUV tailored for the way U.S. customers live, work, and travel,” said Watson.

Plenty of standard features

2027 Kia EV3 - interiorThe new Kia EV3 picks up on the brand’s familiar “Opposites United” design language, which translates into sharp angles and just the vestige of the “tiger nose” grille that has distinguished the automaker’s entries over the last decade. The roofline appears to float as it moves rearward. Both front and rear feature the “Star Map” lighting introduced on Kia’s earlier EVs. And EV3 retains the emphasis on range-extending aerodynamics with features like flush door handles.

EV3 will get a number of standard features not always found in entry segments, including twin 12.3-inch digital displays – part of its Connected Car Navigation Cockpit – as well as a separate 5-inch touchscreen for climate control. On the safety front, the battery-electric vehicle will feature eight standard airbags and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including Forward Collision Avoidance Assist.

Depending upon options and trim package, the new EV3 also will be offered with a head-up display, a 360-degree surround-view monitor, blind-spot monitoring and driver adjustable ambient lighting.

Powertrain

2027 Kia EV3 - rear 3-4 drivingEV3 shares the same 400-volt E-GMP architecture used for Kia’s original EV6 and newer EV9 models. Two battery packs will be offered, starting with a 58.3-kWh package in the Light trim, and the 81.4-kWh alternative in Wind, Land, GT-Line and GT packages.

The smaller pack is expected to yield around 220 miles range, the larger pack bumping that to 320 miles per charge.

EV3 light will use a single, front-mounted motor. Wind and Land will give buyers a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive, with GT-Line and GT sold only in AWD format. Kia only revealed limited performance data in NY, noting AWD versions will make 261 horsepower – with the exception of the GT which bumps that to 288 hp.

The updated i-Pedal 3.0 system allows a driver to readily adjust speed simply by modulating the throttle, and it can bring an EV3 to a complete stop without using the brakes. Unlike earlier Kia EVs, the system will retain the driver’s choice of regenerative braking levels after being shut off and restarted.

Charging and billing

2027 Kia EV3 - NACS PortAs for charging, the Light package will be able to go from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge in as little as 29 minutes using a DC fast charger. The larger battery pack increases that just slightly, to 31 minutes.

All versions of the Kia EV3 will feature the Tesla-style NACS charger port, gaining the little model access to the widespread Supercharger network. The plug-and-charge feature means that motorists will simply need to plug in to automatically provide billing information, depending upon whether that feature is offered by the charging station.

Another feature normally found on more expensive EVs is V2L, or Vehicle-to-Load, allowing a motorist to tap the battery, say, to provide power at a worksite or to keep a home refrigerator running in the even of a blackout.

Watson with EV3 in LA

Pricing and availability

Today, the typical battery-electric vehicle costs about $5,000 more than comparable gas models, and the average transaction price is in the mid-$50,000 range. There’s a widespread consensus that more mainstream offerings will be needed to reverse the recent slump in EV sales, with many manufacturers currently working up more affordable options.

Kia plans to launch EV3 in the U.S. in “late 2026,” and will release final pricing shortly before then. But it’s expected that the new battery-electric entry will start a bit over $30,000 for the Light package, and push to nearer$40,000 for better-equipped, longer-range trims. The GT, meanwhile, could come in closer to $50,000.
