BMW and Mattel Partner up to Bring UNO Card Game To BMW and MINI Vehicles

by | August 15, 2024

BMW and Mattel team up to bring the classic UNO card game to the company’s AirConsole app. Latest partnership follows on the heels of prior deal with Sony Pictures that brought Who Wants To Be A Millionaire to the AirConsole.

BMW and Mattel revealed that they are adding a mobile gaming version of the iconic UNO card game to AirConsole.

BMW is better known for building “The Ultimate Driving Machine” but some of its recent products could also be known as “The Ultimate Gaming Machine” which is thanks to BMW’s AirConsole feature. AirConsole is known for providing innovative multiplayer gaming experiences and is the latest in a growing trend where automakers are adding mobile video gaming technology to the overall driving and ownership experience.

A new partnership between BMW and toy maker Mattel is bringing the iconic UNO card game to AirConsole in a move that will eventually see the game come to over 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles when it’s released to AirConsole on August 21st via an over-the-air software update.

UNO expands AirConsole’s game library

The card game’s arrival is not only an example of AirConsole’s popularity, but also a development in the trend of in-car gaming.

A key pillar that has defined UNO’s ongoing success as one of the most iconic card games ever invented is its ability to not only be easy to play but also how deceptively strategic it can be with the game encouraging players to employ cunning and strategy to achieve victory. The AirConsole version known as “UNO Car Party! is no different with the game allowing up to four players in an equipped vehicle to play a game of UNO.

“We continue to increase the value of the overall digital experience for our customers,” said Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President of the BMW Group Development Connected Company and Technical Operations. “Our partners AirConsole and Mattel are helping make in-car gaming into a new social experience, and I am thrilled to offer a family-favorite game like UNO for this exciting innovation.”

Like other mobile gaming experiences in automobiles, a vehicle equipped with AirConsole must be parked for players to start a game but occupants can use AirConsole’s unique gameplay controller system to connect multiple players to the game via their mobile devices. BMW and Mattel say that UNO is a good fit for connected gameplay since the game retains its easy skill level while also benefitting from modern technology to help create a high level of connectivity between players when going through a round of UNO. “UNO beautifully illustrates the strengths of AirConsole with a game accessible to everyone, a bespoke integration to the car hardware and our phone-controlled gaming experience,” said Anthony Cliquot, CEO of AirConsole. “Each player can secretly see their own cards on their phone while playing on the infotainment system of the car. This is an experience that would be impossible to achieve using only touchscreen or Bluetooth controls on the infotainment system.”

UNO to grace the stage at gamescon2024

The game will initially make its debut at gamescon2024 in Cologne, Germany before rolling out to over 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles via software update on the 21st.

BMW and Airconsole will formally unveil UNO Car Connect Party! next week at gamescon2024 in Cologne, Germany. Their booth will feature a BMW X3 that has the game installed with customers being able to try it out for themselves at the event. After it makes its debut, the game will be streamed over to AirConsole via an OTA update.

While the game will be available in over 500,000 BMW and MINI products, buyers looking to play a friendly game of UNO or any other game on the AirConsole will need to own a BMW or MINI product that’s either equipped with the BMW/MINI Operating system 9 and the BMW Digital Premium/MINI Connected package or the BMW 8.5 Operating system with BMW ConnectedDrive Professional. This latest move builds on a recent wave of success that AirConsole has experienced since 2022 when the system first made its debut in production BMW models with the game library growing significantly since that time.
