Ram and Stellantis announce a recall of 1.2 million 2019-2024 Ram 1500 pickups
Stellantis has been through its fair share of challenges this year with the company struggling with internal issues and declining sales. However, it has also been contending with a growing number of recalls and the company confirmed that it’s not only issuing its 44th recall of the year, but it will also be one of the biggest, with the company recalling over 1.2 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks due to a fault with the stability control system.
This latest notice is unwelcome news for Stellantis and it potentially shines a spotlight on a growing problem for Stellantis when it comes to quality and the safety of some of its most popular vehicles.
Recall focuses on the stability system
The recall focuses on a faulty stability control system but it also shines a spotlight on the company’s high amount of recalls for the year.
This latest recall affects 1,227,808 Ram 1500 pickups from the 2019 to 2024 model years with the toice focusing on a software glitch in the stability control system. This glitch originates in the anti-lock braking system but accompanying recall documents say that it creates a “control module software malfunction” which can cause the stability control to deactivate itself. When that happens, drivers will see several warning lights illuminate on the dashboard indicating that the system has malfunctioned.
No fatalities or accidents have been reported as a result of the problem, and Ram says that the fix itself is relatively simple with service technicians needing to give the anti-lock braking module a software update to correct the programming conflict that causes the stability control system to fail. Ram will begin notifying owners on September 12th, with a more targeted notice campaign for certain owners taking place shortly after on October 3rd.

Recalls a growing problem
The growing number of recalls comes as Stellantis is trying to reverse sliding sales numbers in the U.S.
This latest recall is the 44th recall that Stellantis has had to issue this year and it raises the total number of vehicles affected by various safety-related recalls and notices to 3,897,071. Ford still has the most recalls for the year with the company posting 46 of them so far but Stellantis’s recall woes take on a different tone when you consider all of the internal turmoil that the company has been going through recently.
In addition, this high number of yearly recalls also reverberates out to potential buyers. These buyers care about the quality and long-term safety of a vehicle and when they see a company post as many recalls as Stellantis has over the course of a year, these buyers may be tempted to cross-shop other brands that not only offer vehicles that have a lower price but also vehicles and brands that have less recalls which gives them an enhanced feeling of confidence when looking at a vehicle based on its quality and long-term safety value for the dollar.
