Ford Teases Mustang GTD Nürburgring Record, Will Reveal All Dec. 10

by | December 4, 2024

Ford brings the Mustang GTD to Germany’s Nürburgring Raceway for high-speed testing. Says it will reveal whether the ultimate Mustang managed to set a race record or not on Dec. 10.

Ford promises big news for Mustang GTD fans on Dec. 10 amid record attempts at the Nürburgring.

Ford has tested the Mustang GTD for months at the Nürburgring with the company promising that the heavily upgraded Mustang would grab the world’s attention if it could set a sub-7 minute lap time at the famed raceway.

The company has been quiet since then with engineers focusing the bulk of their time on the art of record busting.

However, the company is indicating that it’s preparing to break its silence with Ford confirming that it will reveal whether the Mustang managed to succeed in its record-breaking quest on Dec. 10 as the company prepares to bring the car into the hands of well-heeled consumers who passed Ford’s rigorous screening to be worthy of owning the vehicle.

Ford promises to go all out

Ford’s video teaser trailer confirms that the GTD is preparing to celeberate a big milestone but some questions remain unaswered.

Ford’s announcement came with a brief video teaser trailer which not only highlights how challenging the record attempt is but also how dangerous it is and what Ford’s test drivers have to contend with when they put the GTD through its paces inside the depths of the Nürburgring which is also known as the Green Hell.

If The Mustang GTD does manage to post a lap time under the 7 minute barrier, it would be the fastest American-built car to ever do the feat with the GTD also potentially snatching the record away from the Dodge Viper ACR which was the last American performance car to go for the record. That model did the deed in 7:01:30 and while it didn’t break the record, the sinister serpent did set a formidable benchmark for Ford to look up to when they embarked on their Nürburgring runs.

The potential record would also put the car in elite company with the Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce being the next rung down on the record ladder with the Italian exotic getting a lap time of 6:59.73 while other German and Italian models also linger with their own respective lap records.

Has Ford set a record?

All will be revealed on Dec. 10 but a track record would help build on the momentum set by early pre-orders and demand for the model.

With Ford going out of its way to tease that it has done something noteworthy at the Nürburgring it’s safe to assume that the company has set a record of some kind at the track since it would not make much sense for Ford to go through all of this trouble to only report that it had failed in its efforts to do so.

The question is by how much and whether it has unseated several prominent benchmarks in its quest for track supremacy.

The Mustang GTD is supposed to make 815 hp from its heavily modified powertrain and when you combine that with its GT3-based chassis and the near 50-50 weight balance, the GTD appears to have the tools to stand out against some big players including the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. The Black Series was actually benchmarked by Ford during its development and the Mustang not only makes more power than the Benz, but also matches its 202 mph top speed too.
