2025 Mini Cooper S Makes its First U.S. Appearance at NY Auto Show

by | March 28, 2024

Mini is maxxing out with new products, and the 2025 Mini Cooper S is the latest to arrive, the three-door making its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show. It has more room and more power – but it’s also more expensive.

A bit larger, but the 2025 Mini Cooper S retains its traditional look.

It’s coming up on 22 years since Mini made its return to the U.S. market and the British marque is celebrating that occasion with the first American showing of its iconic 3-door, the 2025 Mini Cooper S.

While some recent product updates have brought big changes to models like the Countryman crossover, Mini fans won’t have trouble recognizing the newly updated hatchback.

The one thing that might catch potential buyers by surprise is the price tag, the base 2025 Mini Cooper S jumping to $32,200, a full $3,100 more than the outgoing 3-door package.

Design updates

In an unusual move, Mini rolled out the all-electric Cooper SE first. But the design of the gas model isn’t straying far. There are the familiar, circular LED headlamps, as well as the Union Jack-patterned taillamps. The new, octagonal  grille picks up on the design of the SE. The headlamps and LED running lights offer three driver-programmable “signatures,” as Mini calls them: “Classic, Favoured and JCW.”

The 2025 Mini Cooper S gets an updated infotainment system with a new voice assistant.

The cabin picks up on Mini’s familiar, minimalist interior design theme, though there’s a new steering wheel and largely redesigned instrument panel. Mini uses the 9.4-inch OLED digital display for both the infotainment system and to display speed and other vehicle data, perhaps the most controversial aspect of the new design. But the display has been moved closer to the driver to minimize the time a motorist’s eyes are off the road.

Other controls, including the parking brake and gear shift lever also have been moved to more convenient locations.

Love it or leave it, Mini products have been growing ever so slightly larger. And that’s the case here. That translates into a bit more passenger and cargo space. All seats up, there’s 8.9 cubic feet of room in back. Fold down the rear seats and that jumps to 34.4 cf.

Powertrain options

The Cooper S gets a 12-hp boost for 2025, cutting 0-60 launch times down by nearly a second.

In the U.S., the Mini Cooper S will be powered by a BMW-derived Inline-4 displacing 2.0-liters.

The new package is a significant upgrade. At 201 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque that’s 12 hp and 15 lb-ft more than the outgoing hatch. The boost is enough to cut 0-60 times down by nearly a second, to 6.3 seconds.

The Cooper S pushes power through a seven-speed gearbox to the front wheels. No all-wheel-drive is available.

Technology

2025 Mini Cooper S - interior

Some big changes to the interior of the 2025 Mini Cooper and Cooper S.

The Mini Experience Modes twin projector display graphics on the dashboard, along with the ambient lighting system, allows the driver to personalize the look of the cockpit.

The new Mini Cooper S now relies on 12 different exterior sensors, including camera, radar and sonar, upgrade its advanced driver assistance systems. Among the new ADAS features, the Safe Exit function delays unlocking either of the side doors if it senses oncoming traffic when the Mini is parked. It also uses lights to signal those approaching of a potential collision.

And an Alexa-style voice assistant can be activated simply by saying, “Hey, Mini,” to operate a variety of vehicle functions. The Mini Digital Key Plus function lets a motorist use their smartphone instead of a key fob. And it can be transferred electronically to other drivers.

Pricing and availability

The 2025 Mini Cooper S went into production earlier this month.

Pricing starts at $32,200, a $3,100 jump, as earlier noted. Add another $995 for delivery fees.

While reasonably well-equipped, Mini has plenty of options to off, especially with higher trim versions, such as the Preferred package. These can quickly drive the sticker price up to, even beyond, $40,000.

For those on a tighter budget, the base Mini Cooper model goes into production mid-year and will start at $28,950 plus delivery fees.
