Tesla announced plans to recall nearly 700,000 vehicles due to a problem with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in those vehicles. The warning light may not remain lit during the entirety of the problem.
The action impacts certain 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The problem is that the TPMS warning light may not remain illuminated between driving cycles.
This might suggest to some drivers that there is not a problem with low tire pressure on one or multiple tires on the vehicle. If so, the driver could be driving on tires with low pressure which negatively impacts energy consumption as well as increasing the risk of a collision.
Next step
As of Dec. 13, Tesla has identified 76 warranty claims and one field report related to this condition. Tesla is not aware of any collisions, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.
On or shortly after Nov. 12, at no cost to customers, affected vehicles began receiving an over-the-air (OTA) software release that ensures the TPMS warning telltale complies with FMVSS 138, S4.4(b)(3), according to NHTSA.
“No further action is necessary from owners of affected vehicles that are equipped with software release 2024.38.7 or a later release. For affected vehicles equipped with FSD (Supervised), no further action is necessary from owners whose vehicles are equipped with software 12.5.6.4, 13.1, or a later release,” it says in the report.

Recall leader
Tesla’s had more vehicles recalled in 2024 than any other automaker with 4.4 million. Ford is a close second at 4.1 million and Stellantis is third at 3.8 million. If counted by the actual number of recalls, Ford and Chrysler top the list at 51 recalls this year.
The Texas-based EV maker enjoys a significant advantage as nearly all of its recalls are resolved by over-the-air updates. It saves owners time and money while saving Tesla the same.
On the other hand, Ford revealed that it’s bringing in a new quality czar to replace Jim Baumbick, who held the post for several years. He’s being reassigned to the head up the automaker’s electric vehicle programs.
