A Week With: 2026 Nissan Sentra SR

by | November 6, 2026

Last fall, it was clear Nissan could use a grand slam from its lineup, but a bunch of singles and doubles have to happen before going yard. The completely redesigned 2026 Nissan Sentra is certainly an extra base hit that gives the rest of the team hope.

The 2026 Nissan Sentra SR gives compact car buyers a sporty-looking option.

After spending a week behind the wheel of the new Sentra, it’s clear Nissan has done more than simply freshen up an aging compact sedan. The company has given its longtime entry-level offering a substantial makeover, bringing more sophisticated styling, improved technology and a surprisingly upscale interior to a segment that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

The Sentra is available in four trim levels — S, SV, SR and the returning SL — but it’s the SR may be the sweet spot for buyers looking for a little more personality without sacrificing the practicality and affordability that make compact sedans appealing. In short, the SR is cool, sporty-looking version … the “looking” does a lot of work that we’ll get to later.

A Sharper Look

The previous-generation Sentra wasn’t exactly unattractive, but the 2026 model takes a significant step forward in the styling department.

Nissan’s designers have given the car a sleeker, more streamlined appearance, starting with a completely revised front fascia. Narrow, slit-like headlights frame a modern interpretation of the brand’s familiar V-motion grille, creating a more aggressive and contemporary look.

The result is a compact sedan that looks more expensive than it actually is.

The Sentra SR offers a crisp exterior with a comfortable, tech-forward interior.

The SR builds on that foundation with a sportier personality, distinguishing itself from the more traditional appearance of the S, SV and SL models. The SR is aimed at buyers who want their everyday transportation to look like something more than an appliance.

It’s not going to be mistaken for a high-performance sports sedan, but that’s not the point. Nissan has given the Sentra enough visual attitude to stand out in a parking lot without going overboard.

For a segment where styling often takes a back seat to fuel economy and affordability, that’s a welcome development.

Familiar Power, Better Personality

If there’s one area where Nissan elected not to reinvent the wheel, it’s under the hood — which is good and bad.

The 2026 Sentra continues with the familiar 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 149 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission.

Nissan has given the Sentra enough visual attitude to stand out in a parking lot without going overboard.

On paper, those numbers aren’t going to set anyone’s pulse racing. There are certainly more powerful vehicles in the compact segment, and buyers expecting sports-car acceleration from the SR badge are going to be disappointed.

However, there’s more to the driving experience than horsepower.

The CVT is better than expected, and the Sentra’s different driving modes make a noticeable difference in how the car behaves.

The Sentra SR is  a more responsive, tossable little sedan that seems considerably happier when pushed through corners or asked to accelerate onto the highway. No, it doesn’t suddenly transform into a Nissan Z. But there’s enough enthusiasm in the driving experience to make the SR enjoyable rather than merely adequate.

That’s an important distinction in a segment where buyers are frequently told that practicality must come at the expense of driving enjoyment.

An Interior That Punches Above Its Weight

Where the Sentra really makes its case is inside.

Nissan has done an impressive job creating a cabin that feels more upscale than its compact-car classification might suggest.

Nissan has done an impressive job creating a cabin that feels more upscale than its compact-car classification might suggest. The dashboard is clean and contemporary, with the available dual-screen arrangement giving the interior a decidedly modern appearance.

The SR comes standard with sport cloth seats featuring accent stitching, while the available Premium Package adds TailorFit synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and an upgraded Bose audio system.

Nissan’s Zero Gravity seat design has long been one of the company’s strengths, and the Sentra continues that tradition. The front seats offer excellent support, making the car a comfortable place to spend time.

There’s also a surprising amount of room.

At just under 5-foot-10, I found the rear seat perfectly acceptable for a couple of hours. I wouldn’t necessarily volunteer to ride back there on a cross-country adventure, but for commuting, dinner outings or a weekend getaway, there’s sufficient space.

The SR features a pair of 12.3-inch displays, combining a configurable digital instrument cluster with a large central infotainment touchscreen.

The trunk is equally impressive. Nissan designed it with a wide opening and relatively low liftover height, making loading bulky items easier. A couple of sets of golf clubs and several overnight bags shouldn’t present much of a problem.

For buyers who don’t need the extra height or cargo configuration of a crossover, the Sentra makes a compelling argument for sticking with a sedan.

Technology Takes Center Stage

Perhaps the biggest improvement for 2026 is the Sentra’s technology. The SR features a pair of 12.3-inch displays, combining a configurable digital instrument cluster with a large central infotainment touchscreen.

The setup gives the cabin a high-tech appearance while making essential information easy to access. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the lineup, eliminating the need to connect a cable every time you climb aboard. Wireless phone charging is also standard on the SR.

Nissan hasn’t forgotten about safety, either.

Every Sentra comes with the company’s Safety Shield 360 suite, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning.

ProPilot Assist is available on the SR through the Premium Package. The system combines steering assistance with adaptive cruise control to reduce driver workload during highway travel and stop-and-go traffic.

It isn’t a hands-free driving system, and drivers must remain attentive, but it’s another example of technology once reserved for considerably more expensive vehicles finding its way into the compact segment.

The Price Is Right

The 2026 Sentra starts at $22,600 for the base S model, while the SR carries a starting price of $25,000, excluding the $1,245 destination charge. Adding the $2,300 Premium Package, available moonroof, two-tone paint and other options can push a fully equipped SR toward $32,000.

That’s a substantial amount of money for a compact sedan, but the equipment list helps justify the investment. More importantly, buyers don’t need to check every option box to get an attractive, comfortable and technologically advanced vehicle.

The redesigned 2026 Nissan Sentra SR is a reminder of why this segment still matters.

Would I?

Compact sedans don’t receive nearly enough credit these days. Everyone seems determined to buy a crossover, even when a traditional four-door sedan would meet their needs just as well — and frequently for less money.

The redesigned 2026 Nissan Sentra SR is a reminder of why this segment still matters.

It’s attractive, surprisingly spacious, comfortable and loaded with technology. The powertrain isn’t particularly exciting, but Sport mode gives the car enough personality to keep the driving experience interesting.

For younger buyers shopping for their first new vehicle, empty nesters looking to downsize or anyone seeking an affordable second car, the Sentra SR deserves serious consideration. Would I consider it? Yeah. I would if circumstances dictated I needed a car that gets good mileage and it would be a second car.
