A Week With: 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness

by | May 14, 2026

Subaru found itself caught with nothing to offer during the initial years of the SUV boom back in the 1990s. To compensate, the marque raised the ride height of its Legacy station wagon and billed it as the Legacy Outback — the “World’s First Sport Utility Wagon.”

Subaru converted its iconic Outback wagon to a “proper” SUV. Was it necessary? We take a look.

The subterfuge worked so well Outback became a model line unto itself for the 2000 model year. However, it still looked a lot like the Legacy wagon upon which it was based. This has changed with the 2026 Outback, which is now styled to look like the SUV it has long pretended to be. But does its go to match its show? We spent a week with the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness to find out.

More than an update

Completely reworked for the 2026 model year, Outback is now offered as a two-row mid-size SUV. Given the Outback was the first model in the lineup to get the Wilderness package back in 2021, it follows that this latest iteration of the Outback would get it as well.

As a refresher, Wilderness models get increased ground clearance, upgraded suspension components and rugged styling elements to improve their ability to deal with rocks, deep snow and mud.

Wilderness models are further distinguished by anodized copper accents, heavy-duty protective body cladding and an anti-glare hood decal. While these touches absolutely telegraph the Outback Wilderness’ design brief, the result strikes me as being over styled.

The 2026 Outback Wilderness retains its excellent ride height and off-road capability.

I know the product planners were trying to shield the bodywork from the damage off-roading can inflict, while trying to make a statement of ruggedness. However, the plastic cladding is overwrought. It also looks tacked on and kitschy, rather than organically integrated.

Powertrains and Fuel Economy

On the other hand, I found the powertrain’s smoothness to be a definite plus. Flat fours can feel and sound grungy when done wrong, but they got this one absolutely right. The turbocharged 2.4-liter engine is tuned to produce 260 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000.

The continuously variable automatic transmission has a shorter final-drive ratio to help the Outback Wilderness perform better in extreme off-road situations. It also provides an 8-speed manual mode. According to the EPA, the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness is good for 21 mpg in the city, 27 on the highway and 23 overall. The best I saw was 22 combined.

Interior Accommodations

While I wouldn’t characterize the exterior styling as a home run, the redesigned interior treatment is a significant improvement over its ancestral designs. “My” Outback had Subaru’s Option Package 23, which featured Nappa leather upholstery trimmed for the seats with gold stitching.

Power-adjustable, the seats were also heated and ventilated. The driver’s seat was adjustable 12 ways and included a thigh extension. The front passenger’s seat offered eight-way adjustability. Additional features of the package included a moonroof, a 360-degree camera system, navigation and power-folding heated side mirrors.

The exterior’s copper-colored accents were repeated on the steering wheel and shift knob. This was a good thing because the rest of the interior was pretty much one color. Seating was comfortable at all four primary positions, with reasonable legroom, hip room and shoulder room. Outward visibility was unhampered, which was also true for ingress and egress.

Comfort, Convenience & Safety Tech

The focal point of the dash is a 12.1-inch display, which serves as the infotainment system’s user interface. The underlying hardware is upgraded, which makes it more responsive. The home screen offers a menu bar at the top to give the driver quicker access to the navigation, music and telephone functions. I also appreciated the inclusion of physical buttons and knobs for the controls used most often.

Too many designers specify tech for tech’s sake these days, when a simple button is far more elegant and useful. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility were standard, as was voice recognition.

Standard driver assistance tech included forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, along with adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and highway hands-free driving up to 85 mph were options.

Driving Impressions

Launched from a standing start, the Outback registered six-second runs to 60 mph, according to my Omega Speedmaster. Thanks to the new adaptive suspension system, the Outback performed admirably pavement, delivering a smooth and comfortable ride quality, with minimal body roll in turns. Remarkably, this same setup also proved to have above average capability when I took the Subaru over my favorite unpaved road.

Granted I didn’t subject the Outback to anything like you’d find in Moab. However, with 9.5-inches of ground clearance and Subaru’s X-Mode Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings to its credit, I have no doubt the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness will acquit itself favorably when asked to do moderate dirt.

The Outback Wilderness also featured a simple hill descent control system, which uses the CVT and braking to govern its speed on exceptionally steep downgrades.

In Summary

This is easily the most capable iteration of the Subaru Outback ever offered. What’s more, this is likely to be all you’ll ever need if you deal with forest roads and winter driving on mountain roads.

In between, it also serves as useful family transportation with that added halo of ruggedness people crave, whether they will ever use it or not.

As for the look, time will tell whether giving the Outback true SUV styling will alienate current owners, though it does stand to attract new customers to the model. Pricing starts at $44,995. Price as tested for the example of the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness I drove was $50,535.
